Historia
The lives of Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII, and Queen Victoria fill bookshelves and fascinate scholars all over the world. But little attention is given to the ferret who posed for the Renaissance master, the servant who oversaw the Tudor’s toilet time, or the famous horse who thrilled the miserable old monarch. These supporting cast members have been waiting in the wings for too long, and Adrian Bliss thinks it’s high time they join their glory-hogging contemporaries in the spotlight. Fortunately, now they can.

the narrator is always fantastic. the story was interesting. I don't think the dates work out, because I don't think either Walt or Henry are 80+ years old, but that's the magic of fiction

Historia
A burnout at thirty-five, months behind on his book, low on cash, and something of a loser, Eddie Spinola could use a shot in the arm. One day he randomly runs into Vernon, his ex-wife's brother, and his ex-dealer. Now employed by a shadowy pharmaceutical company, Vernon has something that might help: a new designer drug that stimulates brain function. One pill and Eddie is hooked. His book is finished within days; he learns and synthesizes information at a frightening rate; and he can go a long time without sleep or food.

Historia
Riley “Blues Boy” King (1925-2015) was born into deep poverty in Jim Crow Mississippi. Wrenched away from his sharecropper father, B.B. lost his mother at age 10, leaving him more or less alone. Music became his emancipation from exhausting toil in the fields. Inspired by a local minister’s guitar and by the records of Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker and encouraged by his cousin, the established blues man Bukka White, B.B. taught his guitar to sing in the unique solo style that, along with his relentless work ethic and humanity, became his trademark.

it's an amazing story
Revisado: 02-26-24
at times the story seemed formulaic. ripped off by promoters, endless touring, etc. but it stayed away mostly from drugs and alcohol, noting he had quit drinking by the time his diabetes got bad. also the author was enamored by the idea that BB was sterile, and could not have fathered the children he claimed in life.

Steve Martin met his good friend Adam Gopnik three decades ago, and in that time, Gopnik has always marveled at Martin’s ability to flourish in a wide variety of artforms: magic, comedy, art collecting, writing, and music. In So Many Steves: Afternoons with Steve Martin, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik creates a new type of profile: a year’s worth of conversations with Martin where Gopnik pulls back the curtain on his friend’s illustrious career.

Revisado: 02-11-24
This book is conversations between Gopnick and Steve that discuss Steve's career arcs from magician to comedian to movie star to writer to musician and to art collector. it's charming and open and smart. I really enjoyed it.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

surprisingly moving
Revisado: 01-16-23
prince Harry grew up with many advantages but hie lost his mother to relentless press, and his father was distant. he was sent off to boarding school shortly after his mother died. after he graduated, he joined the army in a combat position until his location was leaked by the press. as a result, he had to leave his unit, but he stayed in the army learning to fly helicopters. again the press leaked his location and he could no longer fly. the press hounded him and his girlfriends. later he learned that. much of the bad press he and his wife received was based on reports from his own father. ugh

good yarn with some good curves, very hard boiled noir, with 1930s gangster vibes. Hardly any law in it... so not a trial story. fun, but nothing like Raymond Burr.

Historia
Every life reaches that crucial intersection, the place where you must choose your fate, or have it chosen for you. For best-selling author Rich Cohen (The Fish That Ate the Whale, The Last Pirate of New York), it came in a writing workshop senior year in college, when, at 17, he had to knuckle under to a ruthless professor or make a righteous, self-defeating stand.

story flips between an English girl and a German girl and their war experiences. clearly written by someone who wasn't there. might have been better if shorter, by half. the characters were cookie cutter symbols. I did finish it, but not without skipping chapters in the last half. if only I had skipped chapters in the first half. but I did finish it, so that's something.

glacier Park is a bit player in this story. the main character is unappealing, *haunted by a tragedy* from when he was 14. ending is unsatisfying. not interested in the pooping habits of grizzly bears
