Historia
“Sharks are as timid as rabbits,” says a superintendent of the Coast Guard, dismissing the possibility that a shark could be the culprit in an unprecedented fatal attack at the Jersey Shore. It’s July, and swimming in the sea is a popular new pastime, but people up and down the East Coast are shocked and mystified by the swimmer’s death. A prominent surgeon at the shore, Dr. Edwin Halsey is the one who examines the victim, and the only one who believes the perpetrator was a shark—and that it will strike again.

Interesting subject but poorly executed
Revisado: 04-17-25
The topic of this book was interesting however, the writing was rather amateurish and the narrator sounded like AI…to the point that my son came into the room where I was listening to the audio and asked me why I was having AI read my book.

Historia
It was a mild May morning in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1862, the second year of the Civil War, when a 23-year-old slave named Robert Smalls did the unthinkable and boldly seized a Confederate steamer. With his wife and two young children hidden on board, Smalls and a small crew ran a gauntlet of heavily armed fortifications in Charleston Harbor and delivered the valuable vessel and the massive guns it carried to nearby Union forces.

Amazing man! Amazing story!
Revisado: 02-11-25
Well written with great narrator. Story about an American hero frequently left out of the history books. It is time that Smalls and other ignored heroes and contributors to this country’s history are included. Their history is our history.

Historia
With her remarkable insight into the human condition and silences that contain multitudes, Elizabeth Strout returns to the town of Crosby, Maine, and to her beloved cast of characters—Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, Bob Burgess, and more—as they deal with a shocking crime in their midst, fall in love and yet choose to be apart, and grapple with the question, as Lucy Barton puts it, “What does anyone’s life mean?”

Another great story by Elizabeth Strout
Revisado: 01-21-25
I love the way Elizabeth Strout brings ordinary people to life and takes you into their world where you realize the ordinary can be quite extraordinary. This book is no exception. One feels the human connection in her stories and the feelings that run through us all. I always feel like I’m saying goodbye to old friends when I turn the last page.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 10-25-24
A very thought provoking book dealing with shame, pride, and responsibility of one’s actions…the complexity when these things come together in an ethical and moral dilemma. While I felt empathy for Hanna’s predicament, it was often hard to truly empathize with Hanna…although, in the end perhaps she believed she was paying her penance.

Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Great look at early years of unions
Revisado: 10-19-24
I enjoyed the story and the inclusion of real characters such as Mother Jones. The love story within was a bit predictable at times. I think most time the romance could be left out of most stories and it would be just as good or better but I think in this book it did serve a purpose. The basic narration of the story was good but some of the character voices were irritating…especially that if the children. In fact, I almost stopped listening due to this. This is the second book I’ve listened to one last couple of weeks where the narrator did this irritating high pitched almost slurred interpretation of child voices. Please…if you are going to read books with speaking children characters at least spend some time with children to learn how they speak and sound!!

Historia
In Kabul, 2007, with a drug-addicted father and no brothers, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and can rarely leave the house. Their only hope lies in the ancient custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a boy until she is of marriageable age. As a son, she can attend school, go to the market, and chaperone her older sisters. But Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusual custom. A century earlier, her great-great grandmother, Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life the same way.

Beautiful story of triumph
Revisado: 10-10-24
Well written. Though the narrative slips between two centuries the flow is overall smooth. I found myself truly caring about the plight of the characters. There were a couple of times I felt it was close to predictable but even then there were aspects and twists that I had not seen coming. This is an amazing debut novel.

Ok but not great
Revisado: 10-03-24
I’m not unhappy that I read this book but it’s not one that I would read again. Perhaps if I had not started it expecting historical fiction I would have had different expectations. Other than being set in 1934 Depression era and mentioning a few historical people and events (not all of which were accurate) the story really could have been set in any time period.

A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.
