Historia
Once a culturally rich world, the planet Aka has been utterly transformed by technology. Records of the past have been destroyed, and citizens are strictly monitored. But an official observer from Earth named Sutty has learned of a group of outcasts who live in the wilderness. They still believe in the ancient ways and still practice its lost religion—the Telling. Intrigued by their beliefs, Sutty joins them on a sacred pilgrimage into the mountains … and into the dangerous terrain of her own heart, mind, and soul.

Her best work in the Hainish Cycle
Revisado: 08-09-24
I have listened to three of Le Guin’s science fiction works, including her most popular, The Left-Hand of Darkness, and although the thought experiments are equally provoking, it is the nuance and development of the characters that outshines the others.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Builds more on mystery than character
Revisado: 06-05-24
It might be that I am judging earlier Sanderson on his later works or finding the simpler writing and over explaining in dialogue to recolor (no pun intended) his writings overall, but I find the magic systems and their use and the whodunnit to be the only compelling part of the story.
But unfortunately, I also feel it exposes his overall Cosmere aim: tell the same story of mortals becoming gods through unique magic systems.
Minor spoiler: I personally also have a really hard time for there to not be more pushback within the story over a 17-year-old girl being given to child a 50-year-old king’s heir.

Timely biography
Revisado: 08-08-23
I read Peterson’s memoir, so at first I wasn’t sure a need to step into his life again from a biographical standpoint.
But it turns out I did.
These personal reflections and candor from journals helps add depth and color to an already detailed account of Eugene’s life.
It is a prophetic call to the harried, divisive day of our church (and culture) to strive toward presence, slowness to speak, quickness toward unity.

Historia
Welcome to the summer of 1985 in Philadelphia, when the city was rocked—in almost every sense of the word—by two unprecedented events: Mayor W. Wilson Goode’s May 13 decision to bomb the headquarters of MOVE, a controversial Philadelphia-based radical communal organization, and the July 13 Live Aid concert, where international rock royalty convened in Philly to raise money for victims of the Ethiopian famine. Separated by just two months and eight miles, these events would showcase both the best and the worst of the so-called City of Brotherly Love.

Adding nuance to generally overlooked story
Revisado: 02-13-23
I appreciate the disclaimer from the outset that this story is not black-and-white, but the narrator and reporting team do a good job of offering the thread of various narratives and glimpses of truth we get from them all.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

There’s a book where you read it and enjoy it and connect with the character. And then there’s a book where you read it and really connect with the character. So much of the story honestly makes me reframe how I talk about and view my childhood.

Historia
It's not enough to plant individual churches in isolation from each other. The spiritual need and opportunity of our cities is too big for any one church to meet alone. Pastors Neil Powell and John James contend that to truly transform a city, the gospel compels us to create localized, collaborative church planting movements. They share lessons learned and principles discovered from their experiences leading a successful citywide movement. The more willing we are to collaborate across denominations and networks, the more effectively we will reach our communities for Jesus.

Collaboration principles with specific model
Revisado: 01-31-23
This work ultimately provides readers with a good amount of principles and things to consider when collaborating in city contexts. The authors integrate scripture, strategy and first-hand experiences as they lay out these principles.
The primary weakness of the book is that the strategy and experiences are limited to the context of church planting and through City-to-City, a church planting network from Redeemer Church in NYC.
Having examples in various cities were great, but they never offered a model other than church planters or networks that formed that weren’t City-to-City affiliates.
Still great principles overall, but not a definitive work on collaboration because of these gaps.

Satisfying Conclusion
Revisado: 08-30-22
You know those series where you’ve stuck with the characters and story arc for 3 books or more, where you feel committed and hope your commitment is worthwhile? This series is one of them. Most likely, you have come to that conclusion to, but for those just diving into the world of the Expanse — welcome. Strap into your crash couch, it is worth the ride.
Jefferson Mays continues to add such depth of character and personality, through and through. Thank you for giving voice to these characters and their many kindnesses under-looked in the cosmos.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Light-hearted take on a tough year
Revisado: 08-08-22
Combine Godzilla and the pandemic and food delivery service, and you have the workings of this novel. Scalzi writes in a way that almost brings satire to 2020 while incorporating sci-fi elements. Wheaton is a great fit to voice the light-heartedness. This isn’t hard sci-fi. It isn’t incredibly dramatic or suspenseful, but I found it to be well needed.

Historia
Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Modern-day ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’
Revisado: 03-07-22
In a day where fear of missing out is an acronym, and what-ifs are always in front of us, this story brings refreshment for the modern reader to the same caliber as watching ‘It’s A Wonderful Life.’ The book has just enough science to make it plausible while truly feeling for the main character, Nora.
Narration is well done. Although limited in voice range, the narrator made enough to differentiate speakers and kept you engaged.
