Such a great mystery- had me gripped to the end
Revisado: 02-05-25
Really great mystery! So many twists where I thought I had worked out something, but then a few minutes later, I had no idea again. Loved that it wasn’t a cozy mystery, but then it wasn’t a fast paced drugs and gangs thing - just a lot of twisted mind puzzles!
Great narrator and sound effects- I jumped out of my skin when the church bells chimed all of a sudden 😅

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

A weak story in a line of great works
Revisado: 11-21-24
This was a frustrating read because I love Gamache, but here he was so slow to get the obvious and the solving took so many unnecessary turns that were clearly just to tell the story of Peter - not to actually find him.
Spoiler alert:
Had they just followed the credit card to were it was last used, they could have asked around after Peter like they did, and ended up with the answer to his whereabouts without all the background of his trip. Also Gamache was exceedingly slow to realize that the asbestos came from the only place we had heard about removal of asbestos… he might have thought a little harder about weather it is the sender or the receiver who ends up with the package, and got there a lot sooner….

But the games ended the night Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin into the darkness. The last she - or anyone - saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Now a rising star in the NYC art scene, Emma's paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of the very same Camp Nightingale.

Young adult dramatic language with an ending that was apparent when halfway through the book.
Revisado: 10-01-24
I would probably have liked the book as a teen or early twenties, but the language was far too
embellished for me and the reading overly dramatic. The ending was fairly obvious from about halfway through, although I would have thought the visit in the end to be male ;)
If you like a lot of drama, a heroine that doesn’t mind throwing wild accusations left and right and sprinkled with a troubled romance, then this is surely a great books, since it has a lot of great reviews, it just didn’t do it for me.

Thoroughly enjoyed this time traveling inside the mind
Revisado: 06-24-24
I really liked the perspective of this book, looking into the mind bends that time travel cause.
The murder mystery was also very good.

Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Good story but very young adult
Revisado: 06-20-24
I really liked the story and only hung on because of it. The language was over embellished and very dramatic, something that I’m sure I would have loved as a teenager- descriptions of emotions behind eyes and crushing of lips together that is always aching and raw and so on 😉 But if you’re into that, then the book is very good.

Historia
At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery - and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth - and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery...and the tools for fighting back.

Revisado: 06-20-24
I love time travel books especially 11/22/63 by Stephen King, Wrong place, wrong time by Gillian Mcalister, The first Fifteen lives of Harry August by Claire North, Time and time again by Ben Elton and The seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.
This was definitely no disappointment if you are right now looking for something along those lines and quality.

Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

Young adult romance - wasted 7 h of my life…
Revisado: 04-19-24
Really don’t get the high reviews on this one, I went into it expecting so much more.
This reads like one of those high school movies where the prom king dates the dorky girl on a bet, whoops he falls madly in love, but then oh no, she discovers the bet… There’s no mystery to anything, no surprises or unforeseen plot twists - spend all the time thinking ‘I could have told you that many chapters ago…’. Reading became a chore after the first few hours and I feel myself unable to drag me through the rest - so who knows, maybe I would have been blown away at the end. However reading through the 1 and 2 star reviews, it was revealed that I needn’t suffer any more, there are no surprises waiting at the end.
The language is over embellished and I never got a feeling for the characters, but I do think this might have been just the book for me when I was a teenager.

Really love Gillians books and this one was just as great
Revisado: 01-16-23
Gillian has the best writing style, I love the way she describes emotions and relations.
The complex emotions of a daughter of a convicted murderer - the murderer of her mother no less - is so well written with all the twists and turns and heartbreaks.
And the unraveling of the murder is really captivating and keeps the reader on the edge of the chair all through the book!
