Stereotypes
Revisado: 09-03-21
Okay, I couldn’t handle more than a couple of hours. I try to give books a chance, but this just wasn’t worth the time. The characters were terrible stereotypes, and the plot was like some bad movie you see on TNT at 3am on a Tuesday. The futuristic technology randomly scattered throughout was laughable and not clever at all, if that was what the author was trying. Nope.

Couldn’t get through the first hour
Revisado: 11-26-20
I just couldn’t handle the narrator. Gave up after an hour. The teenage girl voice thing was irritating as hell. I don’t think the writing is up to much to start with and the somewhat high pitch girly voice killed it. Don’t waste your money.

Historia
The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

Get this book - you won’t regret it!
Revisado: 04-28-20
If you’re middle aged, like me, you probably saw the movie when it came out in the early seventies. Winning several Oscars, it quickly became a part of American culture. Who hasn’t repeated phrases taken from the movie to describe Southern backwoods? Or jokingly sung the first notes of that famous banjo ditty. But, strangely I never thought there was a book behind it; I thought it was wholly a Hollywood production from start to finish. Then, a few weeks ago, my book club that selects books randomly - and usually heavy literature - pulled this title from a list of recommended books from NYT. The author, a James Dickey, is perhaps more known for poetry, and was in fact appointed Poet Laureate in the sixties. Not having much time to sit down with actual books, I’m an avid listener of audio books. And I’ll tell you, this is one of the best audio books I’ve ever heard; the writing is superb, the story compelling, and the performance is spot-on. I always enjoyed the movie, but now after reading the book, a whole new dimension is added. I finished the book last night, or actually early this morning! I just couldn’t tear myself away from it. The story is like the whitewater river in the book , it hurls you forward and you just have to hang on. And yet, with Will Patton’s excellent narration, the quiet inner strength of the protagonist, Ed, lies under it all like the river’s current. Get this book!

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Sorry, Stephen, but this one is a stinker.
Revisado: 12-30-19
I’ve read most everything King has written. And I don’t give up on books easily. But after 4 hours listening, I’m throwing in the towel on this one.
The story isn’t that original, and rambles on and on. I know it’s about abducted 12 year olds, but do we have to listen to juvenile discussions about wetting yourself? There is no character development and situations are just not plausible even with my very best King suspension of disbelief.
Narration was fine, but not enough to breath life into this dud.

Couldn't even make it through first chapter
Revisado: 11-29-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I can't imagine who might enjoy this nonsense.
What was most disappointing about Joel M. Andre’s story?
Tripe. Silly nonsense, no character development whatsoever.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Shandon Loring?
Poor narrator. I guess he tried his best.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
None whatsoever.
Any additional comments?
Save your money
