Listened to this book while re-painting our entire house. Do you have any idea how good a book has to be to make literally watching paint dry FUN? This book is another fierce literary accomplishment from Wagers, and I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

This book was a blast!

If you like witty banter, strong friendships, and political intrigue -- all set in space -- you will love this book! Plus, sprinkled throughout the book's fun and intrigue are often some seriously beautifully written lines.

More detailed feelings about the book below. (Spoiler-free, of course)

I love how the author used the matriarchal society to point out how stupid the lack of gender equality is in our current society...yet also give female readers something that is sadly absent in sci-fi: a female heroine that isn't hyper sexualized, isn't too perfect, and isn't just a side character set up as a prize for the male hero. Furthermore, it was super cool to me that the heroine wasn't "strong" because she acted like a man. She was strong because she trusts her own intuition.

What a powerful message that is.

I wish I'd read this kind of book when I was younger. It would have seriously inspired and made an impression, because it shows so many different types of women, in so many different kinds of roles -- all with their own agency, being treated with respect by the author. From the villains, to the side characters, to the hero -- it was so cool to see SO MANY female characters, each with their own motivations, flaws, and personalities. We need more of this in fiction. THANK YOU for writing this.

Gender equality gushing aside -- the story was also really well executed; the author does a fantastic job of making the book feel satisfying by the end, but also setting up the underlying, larger plot at play for the next book.

Highly recommend!

The narrator was amazing and brought the author's beautiful prose to life perfectly. I NEED THE NEXT ONE ASAP!
