Great story line.
Revisado: 03-19-24
This was well written, and the details were fantastic. The narrator made this story even better. Her ability to change her accents from Scots to Irish to English was impressive and a joy to listen to. The plot had plenty of twists, turns and angst, and at times I wanted to throttle Tavis for keeping his feelings to himself. This was a much better and far more believable book than Howell’s Unconquered.

Sorry, not great.
Revisado: 10-17-22
Obviously this is one of Julia Quinn’s earlier works, as I found that it was not nearly as good as previous books I have read by this author. The whole thing lacked finesse, imagination and realistic scenarios. The vocabulary was staid, the characters were boring and inarticulate, and the whole story lacked substance. I found myself rolling my eyes more times than I could count. But what ruined it for me most of all was the narrator, Lucy Rayner. Her British and her American accents were atrocious and made me cringe. I almost couldn’t get through the whole story, and kept thinking that maybe it would get better towards the end. It did not. I was hoping this would be a good series, but if the rest of the books in this series are narrated by the same person, I will not waste another credit on them.

SO SO SO...DARK AND DEPRESSING

Very dark storyline.
Revisado: 04-18-22
This storyline was copied from The Hunger Games, which also was a very dark series. Even the title Highland Hunger reflects that. The book was quite morbid and depressing. For the story to end on their wedding night was disappointing as well. At the very least there should have been a lengthy epilogue describing how the main characters were able to bring relief to their poor clansmen and better the lives of the people of Scotland. An epilogue could have covered the destruction and removal of the Council and their powers, ending the games once and for all. I want to know what revenge was taken against the cruel soldiers who insulted, violated and injured the main characters. What justice did they seek against them? The ending left me feeling empty and unfulfilled. Sadly, this book is not one of this author’s better works.

Historia
Michael McCann has a gentle way with women, and Timona Calverson is no exception, despite her ragged clothes. Though Timona may be no more than a mysterious woman, Michael is determined to keep her from harm, if only for one night. Timona can't bring herself to tell him who she really is - or that her rich family will pay handsomely for her return. She knows very little about Michael McCann, except that he is good enough to give his last cup of tea to a stranger, and compassionate enough to own the ugliest dog on earth.

Three stars for the plot.
Revisado: 05-16-21
The storyline was on the right track, but it felt rushed and not thoroughly thought out. Character development was incomplete, as was the content. The author needed to provide more background and history of each character, such as their early lives, their families and histories, their trials and tribulations, wants and desires, their intentions and plans, and just general information that would help develop the characters and story line into a more definitive image for the reader. I found myself lost several times, wondering if I had skipped a chapter or two. I wondered how a woman could wake up with a shoulder and head injury, and immediately decide that she was going to marry the man who had helped her. She knew absolutely nothing about him. It was implausible. The timeline of various events also seemed to be a bit off, as though they weren’t thought through. The hero’s ability to know exactly what the evil plot against him was going to entail, without evidence or literary speculation, was unrealistic. The attempted rape towards the end of the story left everyone hanging, as she had blacked out. All that we know is that the Irish constable told her he was sorry he couldn’t help her sooner because the door was locked. But do we know exactly what happened before he entered the room? No, that information was left out and we are left to speculate. I felt the whole story was incomplete, and somewhat empty and devoid of necessary information. The narration was good, and I enjoyed her use of various accents, although she has difficulty in making a man’s voice sound plausible. Overall, the story left me wanting for more content, and left me rather unsatisfied. A little more steam and spice would help spruce it up a bit as well. I will give this author another try, as this may have been one of her first attempts. Perhaps she will get better with time.
