SO GOOD!
Revisado: 04-11-25
Where do I start? THIS WAS SO GOOD! While I wasn’t thrilled with the “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, this one reminded me why I could not put down the first three books in the series. This is Haymitch’s story with the introduction and backstories of notable characters we see in the first three books. Stop, drop and roll yourself to the nearest copy. You will not regret it. BRAVA! Suzanne Collins!!

Historia
Boeing is a century-old titan of industry. It played a major role in the early days of commercial flight, World War II bombing missions, and moon landings. The plane maker remains a cornerstone of the U.S. economy, as well as a linchpin in the awesome routine of modern air travel. But in 2018 and 2019, two crashes of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 killed 346 people. The crashes exposed a shocking pattern of malfeasance, leading to the biggest crisis in the company’s history—and one of the costliest corporate scandals ever.

A sad, but good read
Revisado: 01-24-25
Like many, I followed the Lion Air story and slowly watched all of Boeing’s skeletons and failures fall out of the closet. This book does a REALLY good job of breaking down the tragedy and highlighting the dangers of corporate greed, inequity and pure laziness without doing a deep dive into the weeds of aviation. Good, but SAD read. Haven’t and will not fly on an airline that flies the 737 Max.

Great Book. Interesting twists and turns.
Revisado: 09-05-24
This book was GOOD. Great story and plot, but one of the “twists” just fell a little flat for me in the end. Otherwise, I would have given this five stars

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

A good, but sad read
Revisado: 08-27-24
What a riveting, but sad read. Having visited Belfast Northern Ireland a few years ago, I am sad to say it is still pretty divided (Catholics vs. Protestants). If you are not familiar with the IRA or the “Troubles”, this book is a good, but sad deep dive.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

It was OK
Revisado: 08-07-24
This was ok. Started out very slow, with way too much background info on the characters. Picked up in the middle, but the ending just fell very flat for me.

Historia
In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior, for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

An EXCELLENT Read! Great performance by Anna Massey
Revisado: 05-27-24
What an EXCELLENT book! I don’t know how this eluded me in AP English or in College, but so glad I finally got around to it. This also happens to be one of my favorite movies and it’s eerie because as Anna Massey was narrating (I did the audio version and she gave a great performance), Hitchcock casted this movie brilliantly (I could envision each one of them playing these characters perfectly). Story is fantastic, great twists and turns. One of those rare instances where the book is just as good as the movie, BUT Better!!

Historia
It was the Golden Age of Travel, and everyone wanted in. As flying boomed in the 1960s, women from across the United States applied for jobs as stewardesses. They were drawn to the promise of glamorous jet-setting, the chance to see the world, and an alternative to traditional occupations like homemaking, nursing, and teaching.

Great book!
Revisado: 05-13-24
What a FANTASTIC read. If you are an aviation nerd like I am, you will enjoy this book. The book does a great job of presenting the reader with a great overview of the profession and the HELL women had to endure. Many things I was aware of (e.g., weight/age restrictions, the blatant racism and sexism), but I learned a few new things (Can you believe women were EXPECTED to kiss every male passenger on the cheek as they de-planed? And this was in 1972!). I also really appreciated the dive into the union and how women broke away to form their own professional union. Also the advertising campaigns these airlines came up with were downright wrong (Google the Braniff Fly Strip campaign when you have a sec). The PBS series “American Experience” recently did an excellent series on FAs and I think a good portion of that was pulled from this book. 🧳
