Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Best Book I’ve Read In Years
Revisado: 08-31-24
This should be required reading for every American. It is beautifully written, the characters utterly believable and the performance takes you there. The depictions of the slavers’ violence and brutality is heartbreaking and heart wrenching, giving lie to the benevolent master-happy slave myth so many continue to try to sell. America’s “original sin” of slavery is on full and florid display. All of us must acknowledge and understand it. This book can only help that happen. Recommend it to all your friends. It is a “must read,” especially now when race plays such a fundamental role in our divided country yet again.

Historia
In the chaos following World War II, the US government faced many difficult decisions, including what to do with the Third Reich's scientific minds. These were the brains behind the Nazis' once-indomitable war machine. So began Operation Paperclip, a decades-long, covert project to bring Hitler's scientists and their families to the United States. Many of these men were accused of war crimes, and others had stood trial at Nuremberg; one was convicted of mass murder and slavery.

Too much detail. Did not like performance. Hire someone to read this. Too monotone. Overall ok.

In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all - beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn.

Best Friends - - A Life Long Gift
Revisado: 07-18-24
I really liked the relationship between the two women, their story and the arcs of their lives. We, women, make good and lasting friendships and I loved to see that so honored.
The book is well written, carries on at a lively pace, keeps your interest and the dialog was believable.
My criticisms are two:
I found it unnecessary to make Tully so successful. It made the book a bit unrelatable. A lot of very successful women make the same decisions Tully did and do truly love their work to the exclusion of marriage and family. I am one. My best friend is another. You don’t have to be world famous to chose, live and enjoy that life. It was nonetheless interesting to learn a bit about the news business. I doubt I would have watched the Oprah-like show Tully settled on at the end. It seem a bit frivolous compared to the more serious journalistic work of her early career.
I found Kate’s daughter to be an unbelievable character. I’ve known three generations of teen-age girls including my own. Never once have I seen such a terrible, disrespectful and self-centered child in real life. Yes, we were all difficult to varying degrees at that age. It’s a hard age, particularly for girls. But as portrayed, this character was either the product of bad parenting or the kid has a mental health problem worthy of medication. I know, I know, dramatic effect. But the same story could have been more credibly told with a less difficult child.
My criticism takes up more space than my praise. I recommend this book nonetheless.

This is a “Usual Suspects” but centering on a woman. Not an identical plot, of course, but similar in many ways. It’s well written and the plot keeps you hooked. It would make a terrific movie. I can recommend it.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Rich Portrayal of Black Immigrants From The South, Jewish Immigrants From Europe And America’s Treatment of Both
Revisado: 03-13-24
This story’s characters are fascinating and the plot compelling. The view into Black culture and Jewish Immigrant culture in the early 20th Century is enlightening.
At times, the amount of detail in some scenes can be a bit dense to get through but that is my only reservation.
More importantly “then” informs “now” and in so doing demonstrates how far we have come and how far we have yet to go to achieve a fair society.
I’m glad I read it. Interesting, entertaining and enlightening. Can’t ask for much more than that from a book.

Zippi Spitzer and David Wisnia were captivated by each other from the moment they first exchanged glances across the work floor. It was the beginning of a love story that could have happened anywhere. Except for one difference: this romance was unfolding in history’s most notorious death camp, between two young prisoners whose budding intimacy risked dooming them if they were caught.

Excellent Book
Revisado: 03-03-24
This book is both frightening and hopeful. Its chronicle of how the imprisoned women were able to save so many and alleviate at least some of the suffering of others demonstrates hope and bravery can exist in the darkest place there ever was in this world. It is well written and researched, always compelling and provides a rich portrait of its main characters. The performance is wonderful, never gets in the way of the story but also adds richness in its straightforward presentation. I recommend this book without reservation.

Files reveal the murder victim, Reuben Braswell, was a radical conspiracist. The victim was her informant - and had strong reasons to be paranoid.

Fairly Interesting Story But some Large Loopholes
Revisado: 02-12-24
Overall this is an interesting story. And while I appreciate the need to spring the whole of the whodonit and the why he did it to the end, that plot mechanism did not seem credible. The anti-police and anti-government part of the plot device was believable. The personal aspect of the plot device was not. The performance was fine. Others criticize it but in contest to the performance of the first book in the series (The Last Sister) which I read right before this (male doing female voices — ouch), this was so much better.
Worth your time but not great.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Good But . . . .
Revisado: 12-15-23
I really liked this book and the performance until very end. The procedure for picking the Pope is fascinating and wonderfully conveyed as are the politics. The characters are well drawn and developed as the book progresses. The momentum and tension of the story build nicely, captivating the reader’s attention. But, as one other reviewer said, there is one plot twist too many at the very end. While the ending is not credible and basically a stunt, I nevertheless recommend the book. It is so good up to the last few minutes, it is well worth the read.
