The voices are weird but otherwise it’s a good book and good stories
Revisado: 01-16-25
The voices in this series are weird, especially Benny’s voice. It’s like they tried way too hard to make him sound like a little kid. Otherwise I enjoy the stories ( well the original first 30 or so anyway) . I read them as a kid. So it’s fun to hear them again. Besides Benny’s voice the rest of the performance is decent

Reads flat compared to most allegories but I appreciate what the author was trying to do
Revisado: 12-06-24
As a writer, I can see the need to just let the stories I write have their own elements without forcing it from this. This book almost feels like the author felt obliged to include certain elements like a “ high language” just because other fantasy writers have done so. Also, I think the best stories leave room for the reader to contemplate the meaning without leading them to it. This story does a lot of leading. Nonetheless, writing something that shows how spiritual warfare works isn’t easy. I’m still learning how to write fantasy and build a world. So, I am not sure I could do better at this point. However, I hope to eventually be able to do so.

I don’t know why everyone thinks moderation of the original story is a good idea.
Revisado: 08-03-24
I liked that
She left the setting ( time and place the same and the language sounded about right and true to the form of English that was in use at the time.
That said, why would Badger of all people care if Toad kept up his social obligations? Badger who would come to dinner because “ he hated, society and dinner, invitations and all that sort of thing”
Badger who had gotten an idea that things like elbows on the table and everyone talking at once belonged to the things that really didn’t matter?
Seems like the author might have taken Mole’s comment about female nurses from chapter 6 of the original book and run with it like a run away train.
It was a different world and a different culture when the original was published but I think to truly write a good sequel one should respect that world and enter it without trying to change it.
Modern readers and most especially modern writers are guests in that culture and just as one would not visit a different country and insist that the local community change to fit one’s values one shouldn’t try to shift the culture here either.
Also the original book was an allegory and possibly even a double allegory. By comparison, this reads a bit flat.

Great story
Revisado: 07-14-24
It probably takes a lot of guts, and time to learn the technique of one is going to try an any really sense to write in the style of Dr Sues so unless I missed it and this was wrong by him, my hats off to the author.
Unfortunately, the narration was very difficult to understand and listen to

Not as good as the first 2
Revisado: 10-29-23
It was ok but it seemed like it was just written because they agreed to 3 books or something. The first 2 were more creative and lucid dreams gets in the realm of actual witchcraft not something any Christian will appreciate especially in a children’s book

Although I love the biblical focus of these, the stories seem flatter than the ones I grow up with. There’s not much storyline to the stories and I think ( but I could be wrong), that the book I had rhymed

Revisado: 02-14-22
I get the point of cliff hangers and I know kid’s books will naturally be short but this feels really incomplete. I liked the story but I think it will take too many of my credits to finish it. For these reasons if you are a grown up with an “inner kid side” you might be disappointed with this book

It’s not exactly the original boxcar children
Revisado: 11-01-21
On the cool side:
It teaches some survival knowledge which not many kid’s books do.
On the other side of the coin:
First, mushroom hunting is dangerous for the untrained. There’s a saying that you can be an old mushroom hunter or a bold mushroom hunter but not both.
Kids are impressionable. If a story they like makes something look easy they will probably want to try it. I would have focused on anything but mushrooms or had the counselors stop them from eating dangerous ones ; rather than having them stumble on safe ones.
However my biggest complaint about the newest Boxcar Children stories is the unexplained and unexpected time traveling. How did this family move from around 1930 to 2020 without getting any older?
If you are looking through the stories because you are feeling a nostalgic and wanting to hear something along the lines of the stories that you grew up with, this will likely miss that spot!
On the other hand, if you are looking to get your children to like reading, I can see how modern characters would be easier for today’s kids to relate to. And kids still like stories with kids who are left unsupervised.
Still it would help to differentiate the stories if the new authors would take credit in some way. Saying that this is by the original author with no caveats is a little confusing and misleading.

If you are on audible at the moment looking for the deeper side of children's literature along the lines of CS Lewis, keep looking. If on the other hand you want something lite to keep your primary school children assumed for a short time this might be just the thing. This is good for what it is, just don't expect too much
