Light and fun
Revisado: 11-20-23
Love Cobie's deliverance and the story line that keeps getting more involved. The other actors are great and full the ensemble out nicely. Can't wait for the next one--hope it's not too long.

Historia
Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Wonderfully modern and approachable. Bold and uncompromising, a playful linguistic feast. Fry's narration is easy to follow and at times laugh out loud funny.

Boring YA

I had hoped this would be something more than a teen angst story wrapped in a different skin. Nope--not here. Couldn't finish it as the presentation was too 13-year-old-ish.

Historia
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Faithful rendition
Revisado: 12-05-20
I forgot how laugh-out-loud funny Mark Twain can be. This has been a favorite of mine since I was a teen, and I enjoyed this rendition. The narration was pretty good, with my only complaint being I wish Nick Offerman had more voices to offer in depicting the characters.

Harper Lee’s Pulitzer prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep south - and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred, available now for the first time as a digital audiobook. One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than 40 languages, sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the 20th century by librarians across the country.

A little disappointing
Revisado: 12-05-20
I was a little disappointed by this, perhaps because the book has been built up as such a monumental contribution to literature. I found it rather boring, more a "slice of life" work than anything else. I also found Sissy Spacek's narration flat and uninteresting. She gets the Southern accent pretty well, but just reads the book like she's a third-grader instead of an accomplished actress. In the end, it's just a recitation of the words on the page instead of something bordering on a performance or interpretation of the text.

Decent sequel to the first installment
Revisado: 12-05-20
This continues the adventures of Michael, Phoebe, and company. The plot gets a bit convoluted, actually breaking down into separate episodic installments, but it was a fun romp. The author gets in a good blend of legitimate steampunk without being too outrageous, and blends it in naturally as well. The narration is as good as the first one, with the narrator handling numerous voices and accents seamlessly. I was sad to see this is the last book in Audible, even though there is a third volume out there (with three more anticipated by the author). Hopefully the third book will be produce in Audible. If so, I would get it.

Pretty good steampunk
Revisado: 12-05-20
This is a light-hearted mystery/steampunk adventure. I have listened to quite a few "steampunk" titles, but they usually miss by a wide margin, by either having steampunk as a bolt-on feature with obligatory mentions or by having a plot too convoluted to enjoy, or by sexing or romancing it up unnecessarily. This hits a pretty good sweet spot since the magician's angle gives a really good backdrop against which to present the steampunk elements. It sometimes reads a bit like a Saturday morning serial, but that's part of the light-hearted part.

Historia
Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’ friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited. Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

A step down from previous books
Revisado: 11-04-20
This mystery wasn't as compelling as the previous installments. The romance was a bolt-on instead of being more integrated, as well as being rather gratuitous at times. The perversion of the Bad Guy was rather gratuitous too, inserted seemingly to highlight the plight of women in the Victorian era and used to make him more despicable. There were also almost too many characters floating around to really keep track of. Not sure I will stay with the series since it seems to be straying towards more formulaic ground.

A tour de force as an ending to an amazing series. Similar to Lord of the Rings in scope. Wonderful and brilliant with an equally satisfying narration. I can only hope that, at some point, a continuation of adventures starring the rising generation will be in the making.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.
