Not typical science fiction
Revisado: 06-05-23
This book isn’t about the science, although without the science it wouldn’t happen.
The protagonist is driven and selfish and manipulative, but we learn how she got there, and we see her on the path to being a better person. I enjoyed the journey and how it was written.
The narration fit the story perfectly.

Historia
Between the years 1918 and 1920, influenza raged around the globe in the worst pandemic in recorded history, killing at least 50 million people, more than half a million of them Americans. Yet despite the devastation, this catastrophic event seems but a forgotten moment in our nation's past. American Pandemic offers a much-needed corrective to the silence surrounding the influenza outbreak.

Anthropological look at the 1918 pandemic
Revisado: 05-28-23
I’ve read several books about the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic. This one is different; instead of looking at the virus from a medical point of view, it focuses on the impact of the disease on society. It explores, with numerous examples, how governments at all levels, newspapers, medical organizations and individuals, authors, and members of the general public reacted and how their lives were affected.
I though the narration was fine if not ideal.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that terrible apologies are the worst. We’ve all been on the receiving end, and oh, how they make us seethe. Horrible public apologies—excuse-laden, victim blame-y, weaselly statements—often go viral instantaneously, whether they’re from a celebrity, a politician, or a blogger. We all recognize bad apologies when we hear them. So why is it so hard to apologize well? How can we do better? How could they do better?

I've been reading the Sorrywatch site for years, so I was familiar with the concept, but I was impressed with how well it works as a book. This is informative, well researched, and funny.
The narration is terrific and enhances the text.

Historia
When Perry Mason and Paul Drake ran the ad, all they were hoping for was a clue to the identity of a hit-and-run driver. The first reply looked suspicious. It said that the license number of the wanted car was written down in the notebook of a woman who could be out of her apartment from two to five on a certain afternoon, and a key to the apartment was enclosed.

Resolution a bit convoluted
Revisado: 09-20-22
I enjoy these Perry Mason audio books. Sometimes, as with this one, the resolution requires a lot of explanation and isn't something I would get without it, but it's still an enjoyable two hours.

Historia
Private eye Eddie Valiant doesn't like Toons - those cartoon characters who live side-by-side with humans. But Eddie will work for a Toon if his cash supply is low enough. So he reluctantly agrees when Roger Rabbit, a Toon who plays straight man (or should that be straight rabbit) in the Baby Herman cartoon series, asks him to find out who's been trying - unsuccessfully - to buy his contract from the DeGreasy Brothers syndicate. Then Rocco DeGreasy is murdered - and Roger is the prime suspect!

Fun story, great narration
Revisado: 01-30-22
I enjoyed the story, a humorous hard-boiled detective story with comic strip characters, but the narration was a terrific performance.
The movie was mostly a way to combine live action with a lot of recognizable cartoon characters. This holds its own as a novel.

Disappointing after the first book

The awkward scientist/mathematician of the Naturalist is now a jerk with good enough MMA skills to take out professionals. At times the accents in that reading made me cringe. YMMV.

Historia
"The Lottery," one of the most terrifying stories of the twentieth century, created a sensation when it was first published in the New Yorker. "Powerful and haunting," and "nights of unrest" were typical reader responses. This collection, the only one to appear during Jackson's lifetime, unites "The Lottery" with 24 equally unusual stories. Together they demonstrate her remarkable range - from the hilarious to the truly horrible - and power as a storyteller.

Not all the stories are like The Lottery
Revisado: 08-06-18
I thought they would be, so I was surprised but not disappointed. These stories are well-crafted moments in the lives of their characters. Like good short stories, they hit the ground running and, without exposition, gave me all the information I needed.

Historia
Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne’s masterpiece. “Wide-eyed mid-nineteenth-century humanistic optimism in a breezy, blissfully readable translation by Stump” (Kirkus Reviews), here is the enthralling tale of five men and a dog who land in a balloon on a faraway, fantastic island of bewildering goings-on and their struggle to survive....

The story differs in emphasis from subsequent film versions, although the basic idea of using a chemical concoction to produce a physical manifestation of a man's base desires remains the same.
