Historia
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.

what to day about this one?
Revisado: 11-11-24
The author writes very well and there were times I laughed out loud. But it is so overly long - what ever happened to editors? Plus, for me, it was more than a little anti-semetic. There isn't a single good person in the whole book and lots of tropes like nose jobs and fixation on money. Mr. Ballerini is a terrific narrator

A story long overdue
Revisado: 09-27-24
I enjoyed this book and the topic, praising the amazing women who serve, is very important and moving. However, this book pushes the boundaries between literature and romance novel. Too many romance cliches in tone, plot and character development. Still glad I listened.

this is a lovely story, beautifully written in a very straightforward style. Not much happens in the standard plot driven way but lots happen for the two main characters

A great mix of history and fiction
Revisado: 08-10-24
I really loved this book and appreciate the author being very upfront about having done a lot of research but making the story his own. Theodore Roosevelt was a huge gift to the nation and it is a great pity that he was not well enough to have a second term. Honorably, stood down - country first. Great time to be reading this.

This went nowhere very slowly
Revisado: 03-22-24
I will listen to anything that Simon Vance has done. I think he is one of the best and this is no exception. But the story is very weak. There is little character development and what there is is simplistic and stereotypic. And, sadly, the plot is extremely weak. I did hang in there until the end and was left with that "what, that's it!" feeling. Even for the fabulous Mr. Vance, skip this one.

A terrific story idea, but, yikes, not worth 23 plus hours. I am a plot junky so finished it but feel let down now that it is done. Huge build up to not much of an ending. The narration is very good.

She, her husband Harry, and their children Eva and Bernie move from a settled life in Michigan across the country to Margreete’s isolated home, and begin a new life.
