Such a poetic retelling

I really enjoyed this book! The storyline was intricate without getting bogged down, the narrator was talented, and I loved the twist on these classic stories.

Historia
Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie Hall.

Revisado: 09-14-24
I think this book was a perfect for all the teenage fans of Holly Black who are now all grown up! I’m sad I let this sit in my TBR for so long. The story was interesting the you really feel like you are in Charlie’s head. I would highly recommend!

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Slow star, but good!

It was a bit slow (and somewhat triggering) in the first half, but things picked up and it was a pretty good listen!

One of my favorites
Revisado: 04-04-24
Read/listened to this book more than once and it stands as one of my favorites every time! The writing is so poetic and immersive, and the character development is top tier. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a heartfelt standalone.
The narrator (of the audiobook) is terrific and really added to the voice of the story. She added dramatic inflection when needed and does both male & female voices well.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Just…. No.

WHO reads this and thinks “wow, this story full of incest, child brides, and children who are portrayed as WAY too grown up is SUCH a good book, we should make a show!”
Ya’ll need some therapy. I’m all for the kink and the fantasy world. I get that kids in “these positions” would of course be more mature than modern preteens/teens. I am NOT here for the million and one characters, child exploitation, or the idea of a creepy old man sitting behind a computer writing about a THIRTEEN year old girl being caressed and seduced by a 30+yo man. I understand being historically accurate, but I feel like this was an excuse to write about dire wolves and men who “make love” to children/their own sisters.
There are dozens of other books to read if you want a fantasy/romance/bloody battles book.
Please don’t waste your time on this misogynistic w*t dream put to print.
The narrator was tolerable though, so at least that’s something.

I loved the world building in this book! It was quite as “flashy & exciting” as the previous books in the series, but definitely full of emotion and story building!

I really loved this story and the performance was fantastic! Some parts were fairly obvious and lead to some internal screaming lol. But overall I loved how things tied together and the Easter eggs left throughout leading up to the finale.

I was recommended to start the TOG series here, and I was not disappointed whatsoever! So captivating and the world building is exquisite **insert chef’s kiss here**
I listened to it in 2 days and can’t wait to buy the first book in Audible (even though I already started reading my physical copy lol). The narrator is extremely talented and have a great voice, so I think I might finish out the series on audio!
