Historia
When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together.

Interesting premise
Revisado: 04-18-25
The story held my attention. I’m only halfway through. There are moments where the characters are remarkably stupid. But on the whole good. The narrator is pleasant to listen to. Great at conveying emotions. A little more practice portraying women however. I needed context to tell which characters were female.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Pretty well sums it up.
Revisado: 01-15-25
I liked the fairly accurate representations of the people, economic and social situations of the time and locale. I lived through the beginning of the oxycontin “breakthrough” that caused so many people to become addicted no matter their education or economic level.

Historia
Skeeve is a magician’s apprentice (and a wanna-be thief) until an assassin’s bolt kills his master, Garkin. Along with Aahz, the green-scaled, purple-tongued demon and master magician summoned by Garkin, he sets out on a quest to get even. The road to vengeance is bound to prove rocky, however, because Skeeve can barely light a candle with his beginning magic, and Aahz has lost his own considerable magical abilities as a consequence of Garkin’s summoning spell.

Humor, silliness and more.

If only everyone read Sir Terry’s books, the world would be a better place. There is social commentary that bludgeons you and there is Terry Pratchett who gives you joy and humor with a trail of truth throughout.

So far the story seems ok. But it requires an ungodly amount of spit to pronounce the name of the police station. Makes me want to take my earbud out and dry it off.

Historia
By all rights, Arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig should be meeting his maker at the end of a noose. Instead, Lord Vetinari, supreme ruler of Ankh-Morpork, has made him the city’s Postmaster General. Death may be preferable to fixing the Postal Service—a creaky, outdated institution beset by eccentric employees, mountains of old, undelivered mail Moist swears is talking to him, and a dangerous secret order. To restore the postal service to its former glory, Moist accepts the help of the tough talking and very attractive activist Adora Belle Dearheart.

A lot of what you expect
Revisado: 08-22-23
I shouldn’t have started this book. I somehow thought that there would be one or two descriptions of the rape. Nope more than one person experienced it. And it is told from multiple viewpoints. Even if all of it is not graphic, it was too much for me.
It reminds of a painter I knew who painted depictions of abused women. They were painfully accurate. She wanted people to viscerally understand. I am not sure if people that need to understand are capable of that empathy.
I can’t make that judgment for this book or those paintings. I couldn’t finish this book. I couldn’t fairly critique the paintings.
