Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Plot heavy and disappointing narration.
Revisado: 12-12-24
I thought this book was plot heavy and I really missed the presence of Three Pines and all the other wonderful , rich characters. I’m sorry to be so critical. I have always been a HUGE fan, have felt like I would fit right in to the wonderful community you have so consistently created. I am disappointed. And I’m sorry Louise, but I do not agree about the new narrator. I know he is authentic, but I did not think the characters were distinct. I wish I loved it, because I have LOVED all the Gamache books, up until this one. This one I will not listen to again. 😥

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

I loved this book. It is beautifully written and wonderfully read by Jim Broadbent. Deep, complex and it really rings true. Psychology.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

A great story here, but for me it’s not brought to life.
Revisado: 08-14-22
I am not enjoying this narrator. He’s skillful, but he’s seemingly reporting about the story and characters instead inhabiting them.
Also the writing is full of info but it feels more like an elaborate report rather than an engaging story. Too many facts, not enough art.
I have not finished it, at well over halfway through it seems like stretch, the weaving together of Holmes and the Chicago World’s fair.

Historia
In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years?

Good but…..
Revisado: 04-27-22
The author repeatedly, in others of his works, uses the phrase “ colored girl” to refer to a nurse in a hospital, or some such profession. It’s jarring. It’s racist. And it pulls me out of the story. I feel the author ( and the recordings of the books) should make adjustments accordingly. These books are recently enough for the writer to be held accountable.

In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

Beautiful, powerful and heartbreaking.
Revisado: 06-17-21
Alma is a heroine to remember. I loved her, the story and the brilliant performance by Juliet Stevenson. It is a remarkable book. I was NEVER bored for a second and did not want it to end. I knew I would miss the characters, the unique story and the unusual journey Alma takes both literally and figuratively . I literally wept at the end, not just because I was so moved by Alma and her courage and vision, but because I knew how much I would miss the world I got to inhabit in this remarkable and unusual book.
And the writing is exquisite. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Lousy reader
Revisado: 04-23-20
I have loved every Sam Blake novel Ive listened to, since I discovered them. But this one......,even though I THINK the story is good, with interesting, compelling characters, it was hard to tell because the reader was so lame. She sounded completely amateur, like she been pulled off the street to read a story to children, almost no expression. No character differentiation.
It was hard to stay with the story because it was hard to know which character was talking.
Bad. Evanna Lynch. I will avoid books read by her in the future.

At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly.

In a London hospital, Prudence Barrymore, a talented nurse who had once been one of Florence Nightingale’s angels of mercy in the Crimean War, meets sudden death by strangulation. Good stories, great characters.
Revisado: 08-13-12
Would you consider the audio edition of A Sudden, Fearful Death to be better than the print version?
I love this series. The stories are secondary to the very rich and complex characters Ms. Perry creates. She focuses each story on an aspect of social history in 19th C England, making it very personal. And Davina Porter is a brilliiant interpreter, bringing nuance and clarity to every single character. I have not "read" the books on the page, but I am sure Ms. Porter's reading of them improves an already good story.
