Historia
Margaret Murphy is a weaver of fantastic tales, growing up in a world where the truth is too much for one little girl to endure. Her first memory is of the day her friend Agnes died. No one blames Margaret. Not in so many words. Her mother insists to everyone who will listen that her daughter never even left the house that day. Left alone to make sense of tragedy, Margaret wills herself to forget these unbearable memories, replacing them with imagined stories full of faith and magic—that always end happily.

The writing is superb
Revisado: 03-01-24
I loved the mixture of realism and imagination. It made for a sad, tender and utterly original novel. This is a writer to watch.

Historia
On a struggling Texas plantation, six enslaved women slip from their sleeping quarters and gather in the woods under the cover of night. The Lucys—as they call the plantation owners, after Lucifer himself—have decided to turn around the farm’s bleak financial prospects by making the women bear children. They have hired a “stockman” to impregnate them. But the women are determined to protect themselves.

Visceral Telling of an Important Story
Revisado: 03-10-23
In strong beautiful prose, Peyton takes us inside a slave cabin where terrified Black women are forced to breed like cattle. It’s hard to read at times, even harrowing, but always brilliant.

A Fantastic Tour ‘d Force
Revisado: 02-01-23
The Bandit Queen was a delight to read. The dialog is sharp and the characters well-drawn. The seriousness of the topics - India’s patriarchy with husbands allowed to beat and rape their wives, and the caste system- is made bearable by the dark humor that at times had me in hysterics. This does not read like a debut novel and deserves every bit of the hype,
