Historia
In 1942, London, Nancy Mitford is worried about more than air raids and German spies. Still recovering from a devastating loss, the once sparkling Bright Young Thing is estranged from her husband, her allowance has been cut, and she’s given up her writing career. On top of this, her five beautiful but infamous sisters continue making headlines with their controversial politics. Eager for distraction and desperate for income, Nancy jumps at the chance to manage the Heywood Hill bookshop while the owner is away at war.

I just couldn’t like Nancy Mitford
Revisado: 06-11-22
When I read about this, I thought I would really enjoy it. I enjoy reading about those years, and I’ve had quite a few about people, especially women performing sneaky little operations. There is nothing, absolutely nothing about the spy. Other than that she’s having an affair with a man from another country.
In addition, she and her friends are horrible people. Self-absorbed, selfish and they snipe at each other constantly. It was like being at the worlds worst cocktail party.
The secondary story wasn’t a whole lot better. I finished it only because I invested time and money into it. But by the end, I really didn’t care about any of the characters. And for a person who reads as much as I do, and enjoys this genre, that’s a pretty bad condemnation.
On the other hand, the narrator did a pretty good job. I’ve heard better, I had trouble sometimes figuring out which character was speaking. But considering how many minor characters there were who only appeared casually, I thought she did a pretty good job.

Wonderful story, but needs new narration
Revisado: 12-27-20
I almost stopped several times simply because I found the narrator who did Abby so irritating. Every line is said with the same cadence with the last 1 or 2 syllables dropping down in pitch which makes it really hard to listen to for very long. It reminded me of listening to my 1st grader granddaughter read where she simply is saying the words and not telling a story.
But the story, difficult to listen to at times due to the emotion, is wonderful. With the year 2020 being such a train wreck my New Year's resolution is about resilience.
Resilience and a type of vindication is the main theme of the book. And somehow the author has portrayed this without becoming maudlin. A few times I had to stop because I got choked up, but overall I'm glad I finished the book.

A breath of fresh air
Revisado: 05-12-20
Just the right thing to listen to after 7 weeks of sequestering due to the Covid virus. The news is full of bitterness, divisiveness, and feeling alone. This was the perfect antidote.

This snappy, sassy redemption story set in small-town Montana is "a wild and crazy debut novel by a talented young writer" (Jackie Collins), filled with an uproarious and unforgettable cast of characters you won't want to leave behind.

Revisado: 04-30-20
I kept re-reading the description stating it was witty and funny. Nope. The characters are absolutely awful. Nobody, even in these depraved mean times, could be this awful. I regret starting this. I regret struggling to finishing it even more.
