Historia
When the body of a suicide victim disappears at West Point Military Academy in 1831, only to be discovered hours later missing its heart, the Academy calls on retired detective Gus Landor to investigate. Landor is something of a legend among his peers, noted for an uncanny, Holmesian ability to read people. When Edgar Allan Poe, a new cadet, comes forth with his own cryptic conclusion—that the man Landor is looking for is a poet—Landor is intrigued and enlists Poe as his assistant.

the movie was really good; the book is better.
Revisado: 04-06-23
I didn't know Bayard's work before. but i do now. The movie's ending caught me off guard and when I saw there was a book, I got it the next day and plunged right in. I loved the depth of the book, but the movie couldn't go that far.
Charles Leggett was amazing. His voicing of "Gus" reminded me of the late actor Darren McGavin (who would love this, too thinking about one of great tv series, "Kolchak: the Night Stalker!)

Historia
The phrase 'this book will change your life' has become one of the clichés of the publishing world, but Martin Eden is certainly a novel that merits that observation. Set in turn-of-the-century San Francisco, Jack London's semiautobiographical narrative tells of working class sailor Eden's struggle to elevate himself to a level of society wherein, he believes, reside the intellect and culture he craves. One of the reasons for this endeavour is Ruth Morse, with whom he has fallen in love.

Revisado: 12-07-20
Mr. Percy was a brilliant writer, but I sure wished he maybe could have saved a little more energy and cut back on his issues with religion and tied up a few at the very end of the book. It is like he just quit writing it. I expect Cormac McCarthy books to do this, but not in this case. I doubt I would have listened for almost 13 hours had i known this.

Historia
What would you do if you knew your life's potential? That's the question facing the residents of Deerfield, Louisiana, when the DNAMIX machine appears in their local grocery store. It's nothing to look at, really—it resembles a plain photo booth. But its promise is amazing: With just a quick swab of your cheek and two dollars, the device claims to use the science of DNA to tell you your life's potential. With enough credibility to make the townspeople curious, soon the former teachers, nurses, and shopkeepers of Deerfield are abruptly changing course to pursue their destinies.

This could have been a funny book...
Revisado: 11-23-20
...but it was just the opposite. After what i thought was a good beginning, the whole thing began to get tiresome, including the reader. I am as big a fan of John Prine as he ever had, but I did not understand the cribbing of song titles or verses for chapter titles and even the title of the book, and at least in the case of one character assuming the name of a figure in a Prine song (Pamela Walker). Do you have to get permission to do this; obviously not. It was over-kill for an homage to the great singer/songwriter, IMO.

Historia
Fading charmer Tommy Wilhelm has reached his day of reckoning and is scared. In his forties, he still retains a boyish impetuousness that has brought him to the brink of chaos: he is separated from his wife and children; at odds with his vain, successful father; failed in his acting career (a Hollywood agent once placed him as “the type that loses the girl”); and in a financial mess.

Wished Pete Hamill had written a sequel!
Revisado: 08-11-20
I loved everything about this book and i would liked to have known more about the characters as WW II was on the verge of breaking out as it ends. All of them were young and had a lot of living to have expounded upon. I kept wondering about this "North River" that the title and the book refers to, so it was then that I learned this was the older name for the Hudson. I had never known that, but Hamill really knew "his" town.

Set in 1937 in rural Tennessee, with the construction of a monumental dam serving as background, Watershed delivers a gripping story of characters whose ambitions and yearnings threaten to overflow the banks of their time and place. Nathan, an engineer hiding from his past, and Claire, a housewife, struggle to find their footing in the newly electrified, job-hungry, post-Depression South. As Nathan wrestles with a secret guilt and tangled love, Claire struggles to balance motherhood and a newfound freedom that awakens ambitions and a sexuality she hadn't known she possessed.

i did not like the ending. I would listen to Christian Baskous read the "help wanted" ads as long as he doesn't try a southern accent. Even though this book is set in the south, he keeps that in check on this one.

Historia
Lauded as the most profound novel of Jewish life ever written by an American, Call It Sleep seamlessly weaves together the searing pains and subtle joys of immigrant life in New York’s Lower East Side. It is the story of David Schearl, a dangerously imaginative little boy who arrives from Eastern Europe in 1907. Shock by shock, he is exposed to the blows - and occasional pleasures - of life in the crowded tenements.

masterful reading by George Guidall...i doubt I...
Revisado: 06-01-19
could have read all of this book since there are times it does go into long strange almost incoherent dialog BUT to hear Guidall read it kept me hooked. He did a magnificent job with the accents and pronunciations of the Yiddish dialect.
If people had been able to listen to the performance when it came out in 1935 (?), it most certainly would be one of the greatest masterpieces of American literature, IMO/
