Historia
In this episode, I take a deep dive into a Nick Adams Story, "A Way You'll Never Be," in which Hemingway looks to some of the cataclysmic events of World War I that left Nick (and other veterans) so emotionally scarred--something we clearly saw in season 1 with stories like "Soldier's Home" and "Big Two-Hearted River." You can purchase a copy of Hemingway's short stories at my bookshop.org link. In depth analysis of things I didn't even notice. You are helping me to become a better reader and writer. Excellent choice of music. The off kilter tuning juxtaposed with the brave lyrics of the recruit. Perfect.

Historia
“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

Good performance - weak story - dialog wanting
Revisado: 04-21-23
Very disappointing. Interesting focalization, novel conversation with a portrait, nice duck hunting but unconvincing relationship, tiresome bravado and creepy reference to his love interest as "daughter". Same as in the strange country. Equally creepy. Ending reference to Stonewall Jackson quote contrived.

Historia
His second major venture into nonfiction (after Death in the Afternoon, 1932), Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway's lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game country of East Africa, where he and his wife, Pauline, journeyed in December of 1933. Hemingway's well-known interest in - and fascination with - big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip.

His most humorous dialog ever....
Revisado: 03-25-23
I once read a review that said H didn't have a humorous bone in his body. Not so. The dialog here had me giggling throughout. Very witty. Supreme narration. These one star ratings kill me. This one earned a spot on my shelf and likely won't get edged out.

Historia
A sensational best seller when it appeared in 1986, The Garden of Eden is the last uncompleted novel of Ernest Hemingway, which he worked on intermittently from 1946 until his death in 1961. Set on the Côte d'Azur in the 1920s, it is the story of a young American writer, David Bourne, his glamorous wife, Catherine, and the dangerous, erotic game they play when they fall in love with the same woman.

His most vapid character ever....
Revisado: 03-22-23
Gender confusion? All that talk about a haircut was a dead giveaway. The dialog was technically fine as usual, just not very interesting. Makes me wonder about what this couple talked about before getting married and whether H would have ever actually finished the story.

Historia
Still considered one of the best books ever written about bullfighting, Death in the Afternoon reflects Hemingway's belief that bullfighting was more than mere sport. Here he describes and explains the technical aspects of this dangerous ritual, and "the emotional and spiritual intensity and pure classic beauty that can be produced by a man, an animal, and a piece of scarlet serge draped on a stick."

Intriguing title. That's about it. If you're a completist, save it till the end. Desultory and tedious.

An analysis of Hemingway's stories and novels based on my many years of reading and writing about Hemingway and teaching him to high school and college students. I'm a writer and educator who has presented many essays at international Hemingway conferences and published articles on the nuance and complexity of his work. I put special emphasis on how his work echoes thinkers like Carl Jung and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, paying little attention to the deeds and misdeeds of his life, trying to ignore the tremendous shadow these cast on his art. Start with Art Matters
Revisado: 07-29-21
I first listened to this and found it rather tedious only because I was new to the topic and the stories analyzed. Then I picked up a copy of Art Matters along with Hemingway's complete short stories. I read Art Matters then studied it alongside the stories. Now I'm re-reading this book. Huge difference the second time through with better foundation.

Historia
"Of the place where he had been a boy he had written well enough. As well as he could then." So thought a dying writer in an early version of The Snows of Kilimanjaro. The writer was, of course, Ernest Hemingway. The place was the Michigan of his boyhood, where he remembered himself as Nick Adams. The now-famous "Nick Adams" stories show a memorable character growing from child to adolescent to soldier, veteran, writer, and parent - a sequence closely paralleling the events of Hemingway's life.

Great stories. The only thing tough to listen to was the mis-pronunciation of the names of the towns in northern Michigan.
