Historia
More than 100 years ago, the American philosopher William James wrote that the knowledge that we must die is "the worm at the core" of the human condition - a universally shared fear that informs all our thoughts and actions, from the great art we create to the devastating wars we wage.

Late 40s and seeking meaningful perspective? It's not here.
Revisado: 03-13-25
Narration was great. The studies cited and cultural perspectives were interesting, but the grand conclusion and perspective were themselves "dead". I came looking for sincere and deep thought on the subject, but ultimately found only venear with no depth. Good luck on your continued search.

Historia
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work, The Denial of Death is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the "why" of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie: man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality. In doing so, he sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates more than 30 years after its writing.

Came looking for deep and thoughtful perspective and it was a slog through an author parading all his many readings of other big names in psychology, equally of no great perspective. If you are in your late 40's and seeking meaningful perspective on death, save your time and search elsewhere.

As a scout, I needed all my five senses and every faculty of my mind at highest efficiency at all times. There is nothing that sharpens a man’s senses so acutely as to know that bitter and determined enemies are in pursuit of him night and day. In many lines of endeavor, errors may be repeated without fatal results, but in an Indian or savage war, or in a bitter feud, one little slip entails the “absent” mark forever against a man’s name. Solitude intensifies the perceptions. The herd with a thousand eyes trusts itself to a solitary sentinel with only two.

Rarely do we get a chance to peek into the mind of our forebears at the turn of the last century....hear their voice and thoughts and how the viewed the world and experienced the frontiers. well worth the listen! The narrator could have put forth more professional effort to pronounce names and place names correctly...this was a distraction.

These two are the embodiment of a unique intermountain western culture and generation raised in the American 80's. Their perspectives, hopes and dreams mark a passed-over niche chapter in a rapidly changing United States. I enjoyed it, and I am curious to see where their journey takes us! ;)

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

From the perilous ocean crossing to the shared bounty of the first Thanksgiving, the Pilgrim settlement of New England has become enshrined as our most sacred national myth. Yet, as best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals in his spellbinding new book, the true story of the Pilgrims is much more than the well-known tale of piety and sacrifice; it is a 55-year epic that is at once tragic, heroic, exhilarating, and profound.

Historia
Stefan Zweig's memoir, The World of Yesterday, recalls the golden age of prewar Europe - its seeming permanence, its promise and its devastating fall with the onset of two world wars. Zweig's passionate, evocative prose paints a stunning portrait of an era that danced brilliantly on the brink of extinction. It is an unusually humane account of Europe from the closing years of the 19th century through to World War II, seen through the eyes of one of the most famous writers of his era.
