Historia
San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.

It was Ok.
Revisado: 04-08-24
I didn't like the narration of Reggie's character highly accented to the point of distraction and I didnt like her characterat all. Saskia's narration was great, even though I didn't like the characters or their personal stories. They seemed a bit sappy wavering back and forth. Alice and George were the best. The story itself was ok. I didn't like that it had a part 2 for 5 years later. As much as I love Kate Quinn books I was a little disappointed.

Great series
Revisado: 11-17-22
I've enjoyed the series so far, Good character development and storyline. I've looked forward to next book after finishing each in the series. The narration is good and gives each character their own voice. I'm currently waiting for the latest book to be available on audio.

I've read many holocaust memoirs and this story was incredible. I loved that it told the story and journey after liberation and survival too. That persecution didn't stop after getting out in Poland. An interesting life in both the US and Israel. This is at the top of my list of memoirs. The narration was great.

Not how I'd expect spy missions to really be.
Revisado: 09-26-22
The details to history and science great. Narration great. The spy mission plot seemed planned by amateurs, so it seemed unbelievable that this type of team would be sent to Nazi Germany. The characters in their respective positions made frustrating stupid mistakes that true operatives would never do. I always love Ronald Balson books, but struggled with this storyline and characters.

German characters in a very British accent.
Revisado: 09-16-22
It was hard for me to listen to German characters who sounded like they were from England and alway chipper even in difficult situations. Narration is so important in audio books. The story was good, but heroine came off as niave and dramatic. Again that might be because of the narration.

Good Story
Revisado: 04-18-22
I listen to many historical ww2 stories both fiction and non fiction. I had a hard time with this, because the narration was dramatically British for German characters. They never sounded like serious characters. I struggled listening to this for that reason. I really didn't appreciate the story until the end when it was disclosed it was based on a true story.

Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged. His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.

Frustrated from beginning to end.
Revisado: 08-28-21
I found the main character impetuous and whiney. Always making selfish mistakes that seemed unrealistic for a Jewish woman in hiding. Maybe the narration made it seem this way. The German accent exaggerated. I had wished the story was about the other sister instead. Everyone dies but her, for her selfish indignant nature. Even the epilog...make me dislike her even more. I think this was supposed to be a strong woman character...I found her selfish and annoying to the very end.

Good not Great
Revisado: 08-07-21
This was a good story, but not as good as Beneath the Scarlett Sky. It seemed more like a book that would be in the Christian or faith section. I felt irritated by the kids narration. The story itself is quite a triumph of perseverance.

Good story...narration not good.
Revisado: 06-10-20
I first listened to 999, which was a great book excellent narration. I decided to get this book by the author. 999 had a professional narrator, this book was narrated by the author and was spliced several times and annoying. I had to adjust my volume often, and the narration fell flat often. The story itself was very good, so I pushed through. The story is worth redoing the narration.

I haven't read or listened to many stories of Berlin Jews hiding in Berlin. Uboats as they called themselves. Incredible story of survival. One of the best books I've listened to this year. Also, one of the best narrations.
