Orcs and humans. Angels and devils. North and south. Harmony and discord. Threatened by competition in the space they popularized, Blizzard Entertainment looks to the stars to build a new franchise and evolve into a well-oiled machine. No longer the underdog, Blizzard North takes Diablo out of murky dungeons and across deserts, jungles, and snowy mountaintops.

If you are a gaming history junkie like me, you will really appreciate the quality and journalistic integrity of this writers’ work. I have yet to see anything else with this level of professional journalism in the field. I haven’t even played many Blizzard games, and I loved this book!

Blast from the past
Revisado: 11-30-20
Incredibly solid narrator on a fun if somewhat heavy start to my favorite series as a 12 year old. Funny, I first bought this book for the flashy CG cover, now I go strictly audio. Huh.
Looking forward to other narrators keeping the remaining books fresh and varied. As others have mentioned, initially asking price it $9 feels high for such a short book. Hope for reduced prices or package sales in the future (All of Narnia is currently available for 1 credit, so we can dream, right?)
Worth noting that all of these books are also available for free, 100% legal download online as well, for you newer readers who might not have the $$ or patience to wait to see what happens to our fearsome five. Enjoy!!

Historia
In the world of Altadas, there are no more human births. The Regime is replacing the unborn with demons, while the Resistance is trying to destroy a drug called Hope that the demons need to survive. Between these two warring factions lies Jacob, a man who profits from smuggling contraceptive amulets into the city of Blackout. He cares little about the Great Iron War, but a chance capture, and an even more accidental rescue, embroils him in a plot to starve the Regime from power.

Pure Dystopian Pulp! (In a good way)
Revisado: 06-23-20
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book to review.
Dystopia is crowding our shelves full of Dark Towers, Uglies, Hunger Games, etc etc - but for those who like gritty scenarios that give you a fun popcorn-esque thrill ride, look no further than this book. The main character is very much an archetypal maverick, reminiscent of Han Solo and his bad boy, always tough, never compromise attitude.
I mean, c’mon: HE’S A SMUGGLER. ‘Nuff said.
I think a lot of the best parts of this book are found in the world building and thriling scenes - while the kinds of details I like best in my fantasy are sorely lacking, those who listen to this book are looking for Tolkien-style exposition. Instead, they learn of a world facing the potential demise of humanity at the hands of a sinister empire. The war is beyond negotiation or question, but that is likely exactly what the audience wants out of this book: explosions, gunfights, a bloody good time! With the scene set and some mysterious plot elements in motion, the story hits the ground running and doesn’t let up.
One great highlight here (and one of the reasons I was happy to check this out) was the narrator. He has a voice made to read Ender’s Game-style military SF akin to that dude who started narrating movie trailers with “IN A WORLD” at the beginning of each one. If that is your cup of tea, ooo boy, you are in for a treat.
One small gripe that I don’t think everyone will share: the “male gaze” was too strong for my liking in the first romantic entanglement of the series. I allow license for relationships I find in fiction, but having female characters exist solely to fall for/seduce the lone wolf protagonist or get spurned and flustered for NOT getting with the lone wolf protagonist is a kind of James Bond-level wish fulfillment I don’t get down with.
All in all, it’s pulp, so likely a lot of the picking apart and unpacking I want to do with my books doesn’t really apply here. Best to turn the mental filters off, grab a brewskie, make the kessel run in 7.3 parsecs and enjoy this one for the romp that it is.

Historia
Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Learn what drives you
Revisado: 01-30-20
This is a nice little 1-2 hours (depending on your listening speed) you can spend learning about what caffeine is, its botanical roots, its psychoactive effects, and its historic influences.
But really, I felt so bad for the writer who quit coffee for several months to write the book. =[

People are way too harsh on this particular title as an expression of their dissatisfaction with audible originals as a program. Lighten up people. This is a fun little historical fiction romp, and I enjoyed it. You can too!

Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Killer content, awesome professor, cool topics
Revisado: 02-14-19
If you have a modicum of interest in sci-fi or fantasy, get this. The professor's cadence occasionally wears out its welcome, but that is likely only because I binge listened to this in a few days. I now have so many great ideas for books to read thanks to Professor Bedore. I also understand some of my favorite books, like 1984 or a Scanner Darkly, in a new light.
