Historia
Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th Century.

Henry-Whelan are a wonderful team
Revisado: 05-03-25
I dont know why it's not perfect, but it is a beautiful spiral of themes - things that seem trvial come back to blossom, and people are pulled together and apart. It's first person, so I can't even tell you the heroine's name, but she is delightful. In a romance landscape of neurotic, depressed heroines, her joy in the world is a balm, and her automatic assumption that everybody is going through something is a wonderful reminder to stay positive - although not at the expense of your soul.
What removes that 5th star for me is the rather rushed ending.
***SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!***
Sorry to add these, but I'm trying to make a point.
This is a day-by-day story, so having the last part move in months is a bit sad. I think it could have been at least 30 minutes or more longer (probably an hour), with us actually HEARING some of the critical conversations that had to have occurred rather than just knowing that they happened. Ms Henry writes beautiful dialogue that Ms Whelan performs with feeling. I really wish we'd gotten to participate in them.
*The heroine and Margaret's reconciliation.
*Her finally having a conversation with Jody.
*Meeting Nicolette (or whatever the unique spelling of her name is, which turned out to be important - they could have spelled it out for Audible).
*Heroine, Margaret, and Hayden's first group meeting.
*Mom telling daughter that she's happy for her.
This is a problem with many, many romance novels, but with this one, which was otherwise quite satisfying, I felt a bit robbed. You're supposed to walk away from a book about love saying awwwww! But this ending felt like deadline was here and it had to get tied up. So now I don't want to read it again, even though throughout I thought it was going to be a re-listen, like the mentioned Almost Famous is a perpetual re-watch.
Basically, I loved it, it made me laugh and cry, and I wish I could send it back until it was truly completed.

For old-fashioned Romance lovers.
Revisado: 02-25-25
A fairy tale within a fairy tale..... This is a fairy tale romance indeed. I adored Sleeping Beauty in paperback (several times), and may like it even better in Audible.
I admit to finding the other Judith Ivory books I've attempted to be closer to porn than to romance, but the lovely Sleeping Beauty continues to stand alone and stand up to time - even though it certainly has it's share of sex scenes. Those scenes, however, are definitely integral to our understanding of these people and are warm and fun, rather than gymnastic and overly drawn out.
Yes, the premise is a bit ridiculous, and it's true I would normally find the hero and his absurd jealous rages completely annoying, but.... I love the heroine, I enjoy the hero for reasons I don't understand, and the story makes me happy - maybe even more on Audible than in print.
If you enjoy Regency Romance, do yourself a favor and listen to this old favorite, even if you've already read it a time or two before.

So much tragedy, but with a stiff upper lip and a very convenient end. Some beautiful language and descriptions worthy of The Shellseekers, but if not that masterpiece, 3 shorter books may be a better way to spend your time.

If she wasn’t dead already, Delphie would be dying of embarrassment. Not only did she just die by choking on a microwaveable burger, but now she’s standing in her ‘shine like a star’ nightie in front of the hottest man she’s ever seen. And he’s smiling at her. As they start to chat, everything else becomes background noise. That is until someone comes running out of a door, yelling something about a huge mistake, and sends the dreamy stranger back down to earth. And here Delphie was thinking her luck might be different in the afterlife.

Good story; too graphic for me
Revisado: 09-23-24
It's more a novella with "spice" (porn) than a novel. I didn't love the anxiety and neuroses, but I did like the characters' interplay when they weren't keeping secrets.

Historia
Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted. I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark.

Female 1st person done by a man.
Revisado: 09-16-24
Very obvious who done it, you just didn't understand why. The mystery was fine. The performance was odd, though, because a man doing a woman in the first person just doesn't really work. How hard would it have been to get two actors?

Overwrought
Revisado: 09-16-24
I love family sagas, but this one was so saccharine. And the performance was super breathy, as the cherry on top. I have to give it 3 stars because anything less I don't listen until the end. But really.... I don't recommend.

I hate neurotic
Revisado: 08-30-24
Good premise, but I really wanted to slap both leads upside the head - and even the mostly loveable Dottie a couple of times. Jealousy and self-martyrdom are so dumb. I don't know why I didn't stop, honestly. I yelled at the characters more than once. The readers, however, were very good.
