Don't Read This One as an Audiobook

I want to preface this by saying that James Langton did a flawless job reading this title, and I find no fault with his performance, but I really think this book should not be read in audiobook format. This book deals with what feels like hundreds of names of people and many geographic references. When you're reading a physical book it's no problem to just flip back a few pages to remind yourself who X person was or where Y village was. I found myself frequently realizing I had totally misunderstood the geography of Crete or forgotten who someone was who was now important at this stage of the narrative. The whole experience was a headache. I feel bad saying this because the book itself is very well written and expertly narrated, but I do think listening as an audiobook just doesn't work well for this kind of book.

Many years ago I read and very much loved the Sharpe series. I was a little nervous getting back to it. Would it live up to my memory of it? Would Bernard Cornwell still be able to capture what made the series great in the many years since the last book came out?

I'm happy to say the answers to these questions are yes, yes and yes.

I want to also commend the performance of Rupert Farley, who reads these characters' voices exactly as I imagined them.

Glad to Have More Cain!

It is a great treat to have another title of the Ciaphas Cain series on Audible. If you read the first book, you know what you're in for, and this doesn't shy too far away from the patterns established by the first book. This can be both good and bad, as this pattern is a thoroughly entertaining one, but you will find yourself occasionally feeling a sense of déjà vu as Cain goes spelunking in a tunnel system for the umpteenth time.

What makes me really love this presentation, though, are the narrators. Perring, Rawlins, and Gregory are perfectly cast for the parts they narrate. Stephen Perring, in particular, does a great job of capturing Cain's wry cynicism without compromising the gravity of the more serious moments of the story.

I am so excited to see this series being brought to Audible, and I hope Black Library will continue with it!
