Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Sounds incredible until you realize it universal
Revisado: 07-29-24
Unlike mamaw I'm not a fan of swearing. It was a little jarring to hear, but I think editing it out or even toning it down whitewashes the story.
My story isn't as dramatic as JD's, but I grew up in a small mill town and virtually all the men in my family worked at. The best thing to happen to my family was for the mill to shutdown. We moved, my dad went into IT and my mom became a nurse. But the instability JD describes felt like it was one bad month away. I don't think you have to live in Kentucky to live similarly. My mom read this when it came out because a provider she worked with said it reminded him of the reservation we live on. It's true.
I listened to it when I heard he would potentially be the next VP.
It's an inspiring read and well worth the listen regardless of political views.

When a relationship specialist comes onto the show purporting that Adam has hidden feelings for her, she reluctantly agrees to go out with him - on camera. What starts out as one date turns into a viral dating show.

I’ve listened to the married series multiple times. They’re clean and they’re in the romance package. This one is probably my favorite.
Yes it’s crazy, no these plots wouldn’t happen in real life, but they’re a fun escape.
I’ve listened to or read everything Lieske has written and I just enjoy them.

Great Value version Jane Eyre
Revisado: 10-16-18
I listen to 4 or 5 books per week because of my job. So, I can’t be too picky or I’d run out of material. This book kept me interested, but it succumbed to one of my pet peeves: imitating classics without attribution.
I get it, most governess stories are likely going to have some Eyre elements, but...
This book seemed like someone threw the plot points of Jane Eyre in a box, scrambled them up, discarded the gothic points, added some alternate (though possible alternatives to the original) points, and wrapped it in more overt Christianity.
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery—as such Miss Brontë should be flattered.

It was okay
Revisado: 10-16-18
I thought someone was being silly when they mentioned the amount of scripture used in this book, but they’re right, it’s over the top.
The story is okay if somewhat predictable, but that’s okay this plot usually is.
This is kind of a spoiler, but not really ,make of it what you will:
I felt like there was a big jump in the storyline. It seemed as if the heroine went from too shy to kiss her husband on the cheek to pregnant in a blink. *Now* I read or listen to Christian fiction for several reasons, primarily because I like stories that are clean and align with my faith. That being said, I don’t want some big scene, but showing how their relationship built over time would be nice. It’s kind of conventional in these type of stories that the evolution of the couple’s relationship drives the story forward.
Let’s be real, it’s a romance I want more “awwww!” Moments!
Oh, and the reader wasn’t terrible, but the way she pronounced mercantile as “mercantle” made me laugh out loud—literally.

Basically a retelling of Lady of milkweed manor
Revisado: 09-29-18
I read the reviews for this book and one of my friends also said it was horrible.
The reviews found it shocking and a disappointing departure from what Klassen usually writes.
Potential spoilers
Honestly I was ready for some biology lesson sex scene that would prompt me to shut the book off. It wasn’t that. It was in the vein of the scene in LOMM. Stormy night, lonely people, passionate kisses, and description of undressing. Meh. Deanne Gist, Francine Rivers, Julie Lessman, and Marylu Tyndall can push the envelope just as far.
Other complaints said the Christian message was watered down. I didn’t see it that way. Themes of forgiveness and redemption were touched on repeatedly.
Not my favorite Klassen book by far, but I’d say it’s actually better LOMM because the redemption idea comes full circle. Yes, there’s adultery, illegitimate children, and lies but that’s a common device Klassen uses and is common to the genre.
If the book is counter to your convictions I’m not going to criticize, but I had to add my two cents.

Independent publishing at its worst!
Revisado: 09-24-18
These books had decent plots for what they are.
I even enjoyed the overall story, BUT the author needs to learn the finer arts of constructing dialogue. I actually got annoyed listening to it. Dean said, Marcus said, Seth said, said, said, said!
First, there are other verbs that denote speaking. Second, when two characters are conversing we don’t need to constantly be reminded of who is talking. The reader can track the exchange. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if I read it, but hearing the reader repeat the word said made me shudder.

This is an amazing story. Ted Cruz is more than just a senator as he's been dismissed. He's a well reasoned lover of the constitution. He's got an all American story that should be an inspiration to anyone. He's a man for the hour we are facing. I want to see morning dawn in America it's been a long dark night.

Revisado: 04-08-15
I really enjoyed this story! I love pretty much any era of history & this clean romance gives you an interesting look at the feudal system. I've read several different books where the author uses the plot device of a lady trying to pass herself off as a man of course it's always humorous!!! Not criticizing but I do have to wonder IRL would that really work??? Wulfrith is ever the honorable hero & Annyn is certainly spunky

Great read!!!
Revisado: 12-24-14
If you could sum up The Elevator in three words, what would they be?
Extreme elevator ride!!!
What did you like best about this story?
I like that as wild as the plot was it actually sounded like it could have been torn from the morning headlines
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ron Herczig?
No. It was the story that kept me not the reader I'd call him mediocre
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Hmmm books don't usually cause extreme reactions with me. But I did laugh in parts & one part did make me sad. I won't say to avoid spoilers;)
Any additional comments?
It was a great story & the characters were well imagined! It makes me suspicious of my iPhone & enforces may hatred of elevators😜
