I have so much respect for Maureen Callahan and her work as an investigative reporter. She is truly one of the few honest brokers left in her business. I might not always agree with her conclusions, but I believe she, to the best of her abilities, seeks to know the true facts of whatever she is researching or exposing. 👏🏻 This was a fascinating and at so many times a nauseating read. I knew from my parents that the Kennedys were, to say it nicely, a wholly immoral bunch and not worthy of the hype and glitter awarded them. But even my parents had no idea just how vile they were as a whole. I assumed they were well-intentioned people who were flawed and held different politics than mine, HA! Wow isn’t so much worse. They were a despicable lot: sexual abuse, lies, murder, rape, greed, lust for power. You name it, they had it in spades. In modern times, they are often painted as victims of the Deep State. But to my mind, they WERE the Deep State (yes, it exists) and that Deep State has protected them for decades. They were NOT political martyrs. With regards to some of Ms Callahan’s conclusions, I find myself disagreeing with any implications in the Epilogue that the women’s choices were because the men were so bad. No. Women, no matter how vile the man’s actions, do NOT get a pass on their own vile choices. Many of the Kennedy women became as sexually trashy as the men! They became the “other woman” for other married men! How is that EVER justified, just because and there or a husband is wretched? If anything, they should have been MORE determined to choose virtue. Many women stayed because even with a horrid husband, they still wanted the money and prestige of being a Kennedy. That’s ugly greed. Women can’t demand equality and then blame men for their own wicked choices. The thing MOST unforgivable was how horrid and neglectful many of the wives were to their own children! Abusive. The only innocents in this story were the young girls and rape victims. Last, I do think that Ms Callahan sometimes implies a false equivalency between “being a dutiful wife and mother” to “being suppressed and abused”. These two have nothing to do with each other. And when some of the wives became “liberated” their lives were often just as broken. This comes down to personal choices by ADULTS, regardless of what choices others around them made. And sadly, most ALL the Kennedys chose addiction, abuse, greed, lust, and selfishness. Quite the cautionary tale.

As someone who reads a ton of WW2 historical fiction, this has potential and piqued my interest due to the creative and unique perspective. However, the story instead was distracted by an unnatural amount of hand wringing, over-dramatizing, and angst. The ancestors who survived the horrors of the war would be mortified at the self-absorption of the modern day characters in this book who were supposed to be honoring their memory and pain. Good grief- a book for millennials for SURE. While I wouldn’t say the author was a poor writer, her book was poorly constructed- awkward and unnatural dialogue, clumsy transitions, unrealistic interactions between characters. Soooooo many better options out there if you want to read to learn and understand WW2. And good grief: the ending! A ridiculous “visualization” scene, combined with main characters setting up a scholarship to fund the types of degrees millennials love- the kind that they can never get real jobs to pay back as they bemoan the fact that the rest of the hardworking world won’t fund their dreams. Just skip this book so you don’t harm your intellect!

Beautiful story of a gentleman finding his footing in life after losing his beloved wife. Life honoring in so many ways and a story that embraces the bonds of family, faithfulness, and selflessness. So very glad I read this.

Sarah does an excellent job of reminding the homeschool mother of why she chose to accept the job of educating her own kids in the first place. Not only that, but she writes in a beautifully crafted way, exemplifying the deep love of literature and the written word for which she's become known. My heart is filled with gratitude for a book that brings us consistently back to the true aim of cultivating hearts and minds- not merely inputing data- and offering to our children an education steeped in beauty, wisdom, and truth that they (hopefully!) find irresistible! A book to read at least once a year, to be sure! I advise BOTH the audible version (to ensure busy mamas finish the book in a timely fashion!) and the print version (for underlining, notes, & reference!).
