An eye-opener about energy

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-09-08

Friedman's explanation of the importance of energy to the world economy, as well as the environment, over the next century was an eye-opening experience. He goes beyond "easy ways to be green," and beyond the "save the polar bears" emotional appeals -- advocating rather a systemic approach to changing our energy system to remain globally competitive. And, he argues persuasively, this will actually be good for the economy.
One downside of this book is that some of the examples and anecdotes get a bit lengthy, and some of the points repetitive. I usually prefer unabridged books, but I think I would have been just as satisfied with the abridged version of this one.

Disappointed

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-23-05

With the previous volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire, I have been enthralled; this one feels like a chore to get through. So many of my favorite characters have been killed off in the first three volumes, and this book focuses on so many characters that I care nothing about.

I read that this volume is more of a preamble to the next installment, but I like to read books that have some redeeming content of their own.

An audiobook is supposed to be about the audio

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 11-01-05

I chose this audiobook based on the glowing reviews. It's hard to comment on the story itself--eight chapters into the book, I still have a hard time figuring out what is going on. This is some of the poorest narration I've ever heard in an audiobook. The narrator has little inflection, reads at a breakneck pace, and leaves no pauses between sentences, paragraphs, and whole sections. I often find myself trying to absorb one section, only to realize that the narrator has moved on to a different scene and different set of characters with no break in cadence.

Especially in a fantasy novel with unfamiliar character names and geography, this sloppy diction leaves the story in a confusing muddle. For that reason, I find the narrative and characters completely unengaging; perhaps I would feel differently reading the print version.
