Historia
In 1990, IBM had its most profitable year ever. By 1993, the company was on a watch list for extinction, victimized by its own lumbering size, an insular corporate culture, and the PC era IBM had itself helped invent.

simply inspiring
Revisado: 08-30-05
i don't know if everything mr. gerstner wrote is 100% true. it hardly matters, as many lessons on how to view your company and how to make the best out of it were taken from the book. the book taught me practical ways to look at a dismal situation and turn it around for the better.

cool~

now i know why there is a saying, "if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen."
after reading it, i realize running a restaurant really is no different than running any other business. i.e., people will try to get away with as much as they can, behind their silly smiles and courteous greetings. another thing: i don't think i'll eat too many scallops unless i know the guy running the place.

so so...
Revisado: 08-30-05
what the book did was to give me another view of consulting from a reputable source. while i thought the book was well organized, it did not have anything special to take home after reading it. perhaps my expectation was too high....

this is no panacea for your first day
Revisado: 08-30-05
however, the book does give insightful knowledge regarding how to prepare yourself in your new position. i wish i had read this book (was aware of it but did not get around to it) when i got promoted. still, any plan is only as good as the execution, and the book doesn't help you there. it's still up to you to act.
