Good story, but not very deep historically
Revisado: 05-24-24
Cool story with a lot of great first-hand commentary. Author didn’t bother to do much research into Saipan however - very superficial and gets a lot of things wrong. Way too hard on the Army as well: mentions Kiska, but basically leaves out the 7th’s heavy combat on Attu and completely misses Kwajalein (where they actually performed better against a stronger enemy than the 4th MarDiv); highlights the thieves rescuing an Army unit on the airfield, but leaves out that the 25th Marines had already cleared it - they were likely just trying to (smartly) get out of the open; talks about Army holding up the advance in the middle (but really they were in the worst terrain in the whole island - Marine elements on the flanks of this terrain weren’t making progress either; supporting aircraft were Navy, not USMC; gives Marine artillery the credit for breaking up the banzai on July 7th, but that’s not even true at all - Army arty did VAST majority of the firing, attack was finally broken up by 105th Regt HQ - Marine arty in the path of the attack were overrun as well. Funny part is there’s two soldiers fighting equally with them the whole time…
So cool story, definitely worth listening too, but listen more for entertainment, not historical gospel. Find another book for the history of the Saipan battle.

Historia
In August 1776, a little over a month after the Continental Congress had formally declared independence from Britain, the revolution was on the verge of a sudden and disastrous end. General George Washington found his troops outmanned and outmaneuvered at the Battle of Brooklyn, and it looked like there was no escape. But thanks to a series of desperate rear-guard attacks by a single heroic regiment, famously known as the Immortal 400, Washington was able to evacuate his men, and the nascent Continental Army lived to fight another day.

Don’t Let the Cover Fool You
Revisado: 02-13-24
1. It’s not some Band of Brothers-style narrative like the author claims, just a history of the RevWar with a few mentions of this one unit/people from Maryland (rarely more than that they were there…).
2. Author realllllly stretches the definition of “elite” for this one…
3. Narrator has a speech impediment. Fights through it pretty well, but you still catch a lot of “retweet” and “patewiots” - pretty annoying.
Overall, meh. But the Revolution is always a cool story, so I’ll give it a couple stars.

Historia
In this vivid and compelling narrative, the Seven Years' War - long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution - takes on a whole new significance. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain's empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration.

Phenomenal Book
Revisado: 07-28-23
Essential for understanding the roots of the Revolution. Extremely well researched, detailed but still an easy listen. Must read/listen.
Only caveat: the narrator has a brutal whistle on his "s"s... It'll sting the ears, but keep you awake if driving!

Historia
When Metcalfe boarded the C-47 which would drop him at Groesbeek Heights, just outside of Nijmegen, Holland, he was handed a box of twelve dozen condoms by an overconfident British lieutenant. He was to be among the first to jump into what should have been a picture-book meadow, free of German troops. Instead, it was defended by three German antiaircraft cannon emplacements. As he jumped into a hail of bullets and exploding shells, he watched his plane roll over and plummet into the ground.

Cool story, but lazy research
Revisado: 06-11-23
Story is great, but the author clearly put minimal effort into researching (ie. talks about risers from primary and reserve chutes getting mixed up on the packing table - they never would have been on the same table; also Kip's mention of Jumpmasters during jumping - easy to research, just lazy work). Also seems to use a lot of artistic license in his writing. While a cool, unique story, all this makes you question how much you can trust any of it for historical value.

Zero day: a software bug that allows a hacker to break into your devices and move around undetected. One of the most coveted tools in a spy's arsenal, a zero day has the power to silently spy on your iPhone, dismantle the safety controls at a chemical plant, alter an election and shut down the electric grid (just ask Ukraine). For decades, under cover of classification levels and non-disclosure agreements, the United States government became the world’s dominant hoarder of zero days.

Fascinating - until last chapter ruins it
Revisado: 02-16-23
Book is eye-opening, mind-blowing. Everyone should read. Except the last chapter - the author goes on a tear about Trump, talking more politics than info/cyber security (of course without any negative discussion about Biden). Regardless of one's political opinions, it was clearly out of place and really tainted the book.

Worth listening, but a little disappointing.
Revisado: 07-03-22
Good to get more on Spiers, so worth listening. The source material was poor - you get a lot of familiar E CO quotes, but few from D. The author should have spent an additional year doing research. So good, but overall, a little disappointing.

Historia
Few people are aware that John Moses Browning - a tall, humble, cerebral man born in 1855 and raised as a Mormon in the American West - was the mind behind many of the world-changing firearms that dominated more than a century of conflict. He invented the design used in virtually all modern pistols, created the most popular hunting rifles and shotguns, and conceived the machine guns that proved decisive not just in World Wars I and II but nearly every major military action since. Yet few in America knew his name until he was into his 60s.

Historia
Ty Seidule grew up revering Robert E. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the US Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. From a soldier, a scholar, and a southerner, Ty Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning.

Great book
Revisado: 09-20-21
Fantastic book that should be read universally. One note for context: this is the author's experience being raised in the South during the Civil Rights movement - a kid born in Arizona in the 1990s had a different experience. So readers shouldn't think this is universal or what's happening today, but we all definitely need to hear his experience.

Historia
If You Can Keep It is at once a thrilling review of America's uniqueness, and a sobering reminder that America's greatness cannot continue unless we truly understand what our founding fathers meant for us to be. The book includes a stirring call-to-action for every American to understand the ideals behind the "noble experiment in ordered liberty" that is America. It also paints a vivid picture of the tremendous fragility of that experiment and explains why that fragility has been dangerously forgotten.
