Historia
The six Herdman children are “absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world”. They lie and steal and smoke cigars. They even burned down Fred Shoemaker’s old toolhouse. Now they’re taking over the Christmas pageant. The Herdmans have never heard the Christmas story before, and they don’t know anything about shepherds or Wise Men. When Imogene hears about the swaddling clothes, she demands to know why anyone would tie up a baby and put him in a feedbox.

Enjoyable cute story. The recent movie improves on it.
Revisado: 12-11-24
Nice story about a family of troublemaking somewhat neglected children and their insinuation into a small town’s yearly repetitive christmas pageant. Trouble meets “normalcy”. Enjoyed it but truly the 2024 movie adds nuance to the story that helps flesh out the family (the Herdmans) as well as relationships that is perhaps a little lacking in this short ( 2 hour) read. Listen to it. See the movie. Nice to great experiences

Historia
From the master of alternate history comes an epic of the second Civil War. It was an epoch of glory and success, of disaster and despair. 1881: A generation after the South won the Civil War, America writhed once more in the bloody throes of battle. Furious over the annexation of key Mexican territory, the United States declared total war against the Confederate States of America in 1881.

Excellent with fine narrator and interesting story
Revisado: 11-28-24
The alternative historical novel of a war between the USA and the confederate states 20 years after the USA loses the civil war is enjoyable listening. The use of known people and what they did in these unknown times helps cement the reader. Multiple locales are used for storylines involving Stonewall Jackson, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Douglass, George Custer and Abraham Lincoln. Trying to figure out the next book in the Turtledove series to read; an author I found by chance and am happy I did.

Historia
January 1864: General Robert E. Lee faces defeat. The Army of Northern Virginia is ragged and ill-equipped. Gettysburg has broken the back of the Confederacy and decimated its manpower. Then, Andries Rhoodie, a strange man with an unplaceable accent, approaches Lee with an extraordinary offer. Rhoodie demonstrates an amazing rifle: its rate of fire is incredible, its lethal efficiency breathtaking - and Rhoodie guarantees unlimited quantities to the Confederates. The name of the weapon is the AK-47.

Historia
It started as a routine Miami to Charlotte flight for the passengers, crew, and Federal Air Marshal Stephen Mason. But a freak storm over the Atlantic propels the airliner unexplainably back in time to the early 18th century. They find themselves on the sparsely populated coast of the Carolina Colony. Charles Town is the only English settlement of any size in the area. It's an inhospitable place of vast plantations, slavery, hostile natives, tall ships, and marauding pirates.

Historia
England, 1346: For Thomas Blackstone, the choice is easy - dance on the end of a rope for a murder he did not commit, or take up his war bow and join the king's invasion. As he fights his way across northern France, Blackstone learns the brutal lessons of war - from the terror and confusion of his first taste of combat, to the savage realities of siege warfare.

Historia
Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson. Before they were household names, these budding legends called Sue’s Nashville apartment—lovingly dubbed the “Boar’s Nest”—home. Sue’s place was an intimate staging ground where a new breed of singer-songwriters—wounded souls, wayward upstarts—would spur each other on to tap into something bigger, realer.

Historia
A window is but a piece of glass through which we view the world outside. It is not meant to distort. It is not intended to do anything but show us things as they are. At Oxford, though, there is a very particular window that reveals a very particular view. It is a view that defies all laws of nature and science. And when a detective is called in to investigate, he is startled to find that view opens a window into his own life–and a mystery he has never been able to solve.

Fine tearjerker re: a Polish and a Jewish midwife and their WWII travails in and out of Aushwitz
Revisado: 03-27-24
Well narrated. Nice story. At times a tearjerker and ode to love and kind people. I would have liked to ask my departed mother who survived Auschwitz in her midteens what she thought of the book. Historically, there may not have been as many heroic Poles or as many welcoming Poles for the liberated Jewish Poles. It is nicer to imagine such. Certainly the Polish midwife is a heroic figure.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Revisado: 02-20-24
FirstMcBride book I have listened to. Enjoyed it. Fine narraration. A few Hebrew words mispronounced, a problem w many narrator pronouncing foreign languages they are unfamiliar with. Enjoyed the interactions among the people of Pottstown. Positive re interactions with handicapped and with interactions with immigrants Jews and Blacks. Correctly shows each group as complex. Certainly shows that good can triumph over evil. Halevai.. it should only be so.
