Historia
Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same.

A fitting, respectable, and moving conclusion
Revisado: 07-07-23
It is a hard thing to wrap a trilogy. Inheritance is also hard, handing a story on to the next generation risks loosing readers who fell in love with retiring characters. Lee succeeds in every way with this book three as the personal drama of the previous books is pivoted into a generational epic without loosing any intensity.

Beyond Kekon's borders, war is brewing. Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation. Absolute Banger
Revisado: 06-29-23
Believable Asia, _characters_, drugs, gays, gangsters, love, magic, peace, politics, and war: this book has it all and it absolutely slaps. It carries on all the energy and promise of book one with all the characters you still deeply care about while bringing in still more who are just as real.
I can't wait to see how the survivors do in book three.

More landscape than story
Revisado: 02-18-23
A touching landscape of climate grief and hope. More landscape than story, which unfolds over long years of the protagonists' lives. It's world-building of a fantasy West Africa is also a creditable contribution to the genre.
Fans of world-building are highly likely to enjoy the tour. Fans of action should be warned that most conflicts are resolved through drumming and debate.

Not quite a good draft
Revisado: 02-03-23
The author had some interesting world-building concepts. Unfortunately the world wasn't built, the characters were unbelievable, and the central conflict of the plot was not revealed until the epilogue. Assuming the author is in her teens, the work has potential that may be revealed if her talent is developed and her ideas matured.

Oops all tropes
Revisado: 11-17-22
The biggest problem is that none of the characters' act in a believable or consistent way. This is likely due to the author having attempted to craft a novel simply by chaining every fantasy trope together in a line. It doesn't work.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

A love-hate affair with academia and empire
Revisado: 11-02-22
A novel that approaches perfection. Every circle closed and the end is exactly what it had to be. On the way, excellent research and a highly creditable treatment of language guides the reader through a truth-filled historical fiction. The author expertly weaves revisionist post-colonial historiography with the seductive fantasies of privilege that characterize a period piece. The work's only apparent weakness comes in the polemicist's voice which, at times, strains immersion with anachronistic modernity.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Digestive Existentialism for the End Times
Revisado: 10-25-22
Fittingly this book feels like a warm mug of tea. It stands comfortably halfway between easy-reading existentialism and intriguing speculative fiction. The alloy of climate grief and optimism is an added bonus.

Historia
M is a magician of modest wit, dim ability, and few scruples, who would prefer to spend his easy immortality drinking artisanal beer and making eyes at smiling women. Alas, in the infinite nexus of the universe that is New York City, equilibrium is no easy thing to maintain. Canal pirates, drug-induced divinities, pocket steam-punk universes, hipster zombies, ex-girlfriends, and the devil are all taken in easy stride.

Exquisite magical realism, rare in English
Revisado: 03-22-22
Some books are spells. The words weave over and through you. They wind up a bridge to carry you from the person who you were before and the person you are after reading. The differences may be subtle but they are significant. Once you have heard the words you cannot help but to feel and to see the world has been tilted to a different angle so long as the spell lasts. This is one such book: a book full of poignancy, humour, and illusion.
