Historia
When stylish young bibliophile Julia Kydd returns to 1920s New York, she’s determined to launch her own private press. Julia’s aspirations take her into the heart of the Harlem Renaissance, a literary movement unlike any she’s known - where notions of race, sexuality, and power are slippery, and identities can be deceptively fluid.

Best Book This Year!
Revisado: 03-23-24
I ffirst met Julia Kidd in the book Relative Fortunes. I was happy to see this continuation of her story. But wow, this one was even better! I listened to the audio version and it was excellent. The timeline of the 1930s and the subject of the Harlem Renaissance is of great interest to me, so I especially enjoyed this book.

Historia
May 1912. After the previous year’s deadly heatwave, it’s been an uneventful spring in Littleton Cotterell. Though for Lady Hardcastle and her fiercely loyal lady’s maid Flo, at least there are the provincial delights of the village’s inaugural art exhibition—and bicycle race—to look forward to. But at the exhibition opening, there’s a panicked shout of ‘Fire!’ In the confusion, the main attraction—an extremely expensive book—is stolen from under everyone’s nose, as is a valuable painting lent by Sir Hector Farley-Stroud.

Inside are paintings Tess’s late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. This one touched ALL the feelings. Roosevelt 's WPA programs brought work to many down and out people during the depression, and the one interviewing former slaves was one of the most interesting and most controversial. One woman's experiences during this time will keep you enthralled from beginning to end.

Great story, great narrator
Revisado: 01-05-21
The narrator's southern accent was spot on. Of course. some people won't appreciate that... They also may not appreciate the religious aspect, even tho it is definitely not a religious book. The Hawthorne Sisters sang at church and revival meetings in the 30s and performed "healings". Most of the songs mentioned were familiar to me. Did the sisters have a real "gift" or was it all fake? And why was a preacher from one of the girls ' past trying to kidnap her?
