This is pornography.
Revisado: 07-27-18
I figured that this would be a mediocre book at best, but I've been surprised before, so I purchased it, and basically only because it repeatedly showed up in my recommendations. It's horrible fantasy lit, but what really makes it bad is that it's pornographic and totally gross. The last thing I want to hear in a fantasy book is graphic details about a guy having sex with a Driad, Orc, and humanoid Ant. an ant...really? the thing that really gets me is that I've selected to not get any suggestions in the erotica category and I would definitely put this trash that category and I also put off buying this because it seems like it would be tailored more to a teen, or young adult audience. i hope I can get my credit back.

Better than a 2 star, but not quite a 3 star.
Revisado: 12-23-16
This is for the 1st three books in the series.
I'd consider this epic fantasy, but it's pretty formulaic, and falls short. It's a typical coming of age story. The books have been good enough for me to get to the 3rd book in three series, but I think I'll stop here, at least for a while. The narrator is really bad. His monotone voice kind of makes the dialogue melt together. He also doesn't really have any character voices. In this case it's not really a bad thing. I'd rather listen to a narrator who can't voice acting, than have one that thinks they can, but when they try they're absolutely horrendous. Anyway, I'd pass on this one unless your aware of its shortcomings.

I think I would have enjoyed this book back when I was a pre-teen boy. Even though I like books from all age groups, I just didn't enjoy this one. In fact I only listened to the first and last 3 hours of the novel, being left feeling that I didn't miss any thing. The narration is pretty bad too.I'd pass on this one if you're an adult.

In the summer between second and third year at Whitehall, Emily accompanies Lady Barb on her rounds of the Cairngorm Mountains, bringing magical help to the locals and searching for new magicians. For Emily, tired and broken after the events of Study in Slaughter, it should be a chance to relax as well as to visit a new part of the Nameless World, to put her responsibilities aside and just be herself. But the locals aren't quite what she expects, with problems of their own, and Lady Barb is a different person away from Whitehall.

I like this series
Revisado: 12-17-16
I've really enjoy this series. I usually don't enjoy books where the protagonist is transported from Earth to another planet, but this author ties it into the story line through out the series in a believable manner. The magic system is "somewhat" novel, but it is still believable, or at least makes sense. I like it when preforming magic has a cost, like you need extra sleep after doing a lot of it, and this one does. I also like how the protagonist learns to use the magic in class and on the road. The books can be a little slow, but it's not too bad. The Narration is excellent. I completely forgot there was just one narrator, instead of a bunch of people speaking their part. I think the charicters are believable. There's very, very little young romance in the books, really just a little talk about relationships and discussions about boyfriends in the books, which is another positive thing about the series. I recommend this series if there's nothing else you're dieing to listen to. I also expecially recommend this series to teenage and young adult woman. And it's rare for me to recommend a series targeted towards woman, since I'm a man in his fifties, though I do like books of all age ranges.

This ancient and mysterious power and unearthly spirit of vampire lore has all the force, history, and insidious reach of the unknowable universe.

Not her best, but still very good.
Revisado: 12-02-16
Most of Anne's books have more action than this one. The writing style, in my opinion is more like her Mayfair books, but entirely in the vampire world. There were lots of discussions about concepts, new charicters, and the world of Atlantis. The full cast of characters are there, but not everyone has a speaking role. Overall I enjoyed it. Simon Vance did an excellent job! I have mixed opinions about him. He is sometimes mediocre, and puts me to sleep with his sing song cadence, or he does such fantastic job that he can make an awful book seem better than average.

Great Series!
Revisado: 08-30-16
This is a great epic series. I was constantly suprised as events in the story as they unfolded. The story is not predictable. I kept feeling that I was at the climax of the story, only to find out upon checking was that there were hours left in the book, and when the real climax and ending of the book occurred I was totally surprised by it, and definitely was left wanting more. Every time I listen to a novel by Carol Burg I like her writing more. Her fantasy is refreshing, her world's are new and believable, and she breaths life into her characters. The narrators are excellent. There are some reviewers that were angry that the narrators didn't get together and coordinate how to pronounce words used in the book and I think they should just give them a break. Even Kate Reading and Michael Kramer don't always pronounce words the same when they narrate the same book and they're married. I also liked the magic system in the book. I found it expansive and believable. I highly recommend this series for those that like original and refreshing epic fantasy, with extensive world building, a unique magic system, and believable characters with depth.

Now she's on the run from half of the evil sorcerers in the land, not to mention their relentless minions. But with the help of a handsome young wizard, some rough-and-tumble Knights of Myth Drannor, and a certain old mage of Shadowdale, she just might manage to stay alive. At least until tomorrow.

Pure cookie cutter with atrocious narration!
Revisado: 08-29-16
If the narration weren't so bad I probably would have enjoyed these books more. Listening at 0.90X made the narration a little better, but dragged out the misery. I took a lot of naps while listening to books one and two and I didn't bother listening to book 3. These books are really guards for pre-teens, which I can really enjoy at times. I do not recommend this trilogy. Enough said...

How much must one pay for an hour of youthful folly? The Pureblood Registry accused Lucian de Remeni-Masson of "unseemly involvement with ordinaries", which meant only that he spoke with a young woman not of his own kind, allowed her to see his face unmasked, worked a bit of magic for her.... After that one mistake, Lucian’s grandsire excised half his magic and savage Harrowers massacred his family.

Excellent Duet
Revisado: 08-04-16
This and the 2nd book are fantastic. I can easily understand why Brandon Sanderson says that Carol Berg is one of the people who influenced his writing. She has quite an imagination. When I first started listening to these books I thought I knew where they were going, but much to my satisfaction I was wrong. These books are full of surprises, which sent my imagination flying, and left me hungering for more, and yet satisfied at the time the story ends. The magic system is really cool and it really develops in the 2nd book. MacLeod Andrews does an Excellant job too. I've only listened to one other series narrated by MacLeod before and he just did a so-so job on it. Now that I know how good a narrator he can be I'll be looking for other books that he narrates. I highly recommend this series to anyone that likes epic fantasy and novel, interesting magic systems!
