Historia
Jennifer Egan’s spellbinding interlocking narratives circle the lives of Bennie Salazar, an aging former punk rocker and record executive, and Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. Although Bennie and Sasha never discover each other’s pasts, the listener does, in intimate detail, along with the secret lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs, over many years, in locales as varied as New York, San Francisco, Naples, and Africa.

Only if you like Contemporary American Literature
Revisado: 05-04-25
Read this book because it was discussed in two different classes, so I read it twice. First time I didn't really enjoy it at all, and didn't want to bother finishing (ended up skipping some chapters), second time I got through the whole book.
Touches on themes of SA, corruption in the music industry, grooming, in some of the stories- which I kinda wished I knew before reading (went in completely blind).
Has a very potent layer of American self-aware cynicism/criticism, which can get grating if you're not a fan of American Contemporary lit, or you're not American and the issues seem very detached/weird (which I'm not on both fronts).
The book is overall heavily character driven, some characters are much more fleshed out than others, some characters seem to be assholes simply for the heck of it.
I disliked more chapters than I liked, although I wouldn't necessarily call all the chapters I disliked "bad", more so "not to my taste" (the writer is clearly doing her thing, I just don't enjoy this style of story).
In 2024-2025, some parts definitely feel dated; I could see this book being very relevant for the time it was published, but its age is showing now (and I guess that plays well with the themes of the book, in a strange way).
I kinda just felt gross or uncomfortable through the majority of my read, so I can't really recommend it with a score higher than "It's okay, I guess..." (would've given it maybe a 2.5 stars, just because it was better on 2nd read than 1st read).
I wouldn't have read it for my pleasure, can't say I'd like to read it again, but it was a memorable experience nonetheless.
The narration was a bit monotone/flat, but it wasn't too distracting. Could've been worse, could've been better.

Historia
In this novel of lifelong reckoning between two women by the award-winning Mary Gordon, we meet Quin Archer, the revenge-loving queen of the reality-TV show Payback. Unbeknownst to her many fans, Quin was once an angry teen named Heidi, whose true story may be known only to Agnes, her art teacher at a private New England girls’ school in the 1970s. Then a young woman herself, Agnes saw a spark of originality in the brooding Heidi. But when she suggested Heidi visit the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the girl returned with a disastrous account....

Only bearable due to great narration
Revisado: 10-07-24
I didn't enjoy this book.
The plot felt incredibly lackluster, and both heroines are terribly tedious and unlikeable. The prose is beautiful, but it's like a shiny skin on a tomato that's rotten inside. I can't figure out if the book's so painfully melodramatic on purpose (to drive home some point), or if this was an unfortunate accident.
The narrator's performance was phenomenal.
