Kristin Hannah doesn’t disappoint
Revisado: 03-24-24
What a beautiful narrative. What an important story. As an OR nurse and previous psychiatric nurse this story felt very true. I am struck by the fact that even though I am an avid reader and consumer of audio books this is one of less than a handful of books that I’ve read about nurses. Thank you Kristin Hannah for telling these beautiful stories.

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platforms that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Slow paced and dull characters
Revisado: 11-26-23
This one wasn't nearly as good as the first one. I didn't really empathize with any of the characters. I could have done without half of the chapters about Jimmy, and both Donald and Jimmy are just too simple, naive or even plain stupid in Donald's case. It seems very improbable to me that a person as clueless and spineless as Donald would ever get ahead in politics, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. I almost quit listening during the descriptions on Anne's ridiculous seduction of Donald. It would have been nice if Anne had had a personality beyond being in love with her ex. All in all quite a disappointment after a pretty good start in Wool.

Wish I could give six stars to the narrator
Revisado: 10-21-23
It's not often that I give 5 star reviews but this one deserves it. It takes a special kind of talent to write this beautifully about something so horrible. The narrator is superb.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Typical King
Revisado: 12-30-22
It's funny how Stephen King can make mundane things interesting and engaging while making fantastical things uninteresting. After the first couple of hours, I was fully invested in this kid's life, with the alcoholic father and taking care of a grumpy old man. As a nurse, it resonated strongly with me. Now, I'm a sci-fi/fantasy nerd through and through, so when we finally went down the well, I was ready for adventure. It started out interestingly enough. The world building and characters seemed promising. But then it slowly unravelled, like so many of King's novels. It's like he is so eager to start writing and gets so caught up in creating characters that he forgets to finish plotting. Then he ends up having to hide a bunch of plot holes that shouldn't have to be there. I will always forgive him, though, because of his ability to write wonderfully flawed and yet beautiful characters.

Historia
When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he's been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn't just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth…

No literary achievement
Revisado: 12-30-22
It wasn't boring. The plot wasn't too bad, but the characters and their interactions were unimaginative and unconvincing. One of those stories that you continue listening to even though you don't quite know what's keeping you at it.

Could have been a couple of chapters in book 2
Revisado: 08-31-22
This trilogy only had enough material for two books. I was profoundly bored throughout most of it. Extremely predictable, and really, nobody needs this much closure. The male narrator was quite irritating as well. I understand he was trying to depict the aristocracy as uptight, but it would have been nice if just one of them didn't speak through gritted teeth all the time. I read the first book of the series and listened to the other two and I really disagree with the male narrator's depiction of Rhy as a whiny pushover. When reading, I imagined him as a playful, frivolous, but still highly capable prince despite his lack of magic, but when listening he comes across as spoiled, dependent, and inept. Fortunately the female narrator gave a welcome respite from the irritating male voice.

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Death by narration
Revisado: 02-04-22
The incorrect use of nordic names and words is a minor irritation that becomes insurmountable when delivered like the narrator would rather die than finish this book. By this point I'm not really sure if it's the book that's terrible or if I just can't relate to any of the characters because the narrator is so boring.

What a beautiful novel
Revisado: 01-31-21
I bought this book expecting a humorous take on the end of the world but it was so much more. I devour sci-fi novels and series of all shapes and sizes and this was so refreshing. An apocalypse that's not caused by climate change or a pandemic was a welcome respite from the daily news, even one that involves a fascist regime.

Historia
In 1917, as a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses. The very thing that had made them feel alive was in fact killing them.

The radium girls deserve a better book
Revisado: 10-22-20
This book could have been cut by two thirds. Overly sentimental and repetitive. There are podcasts that to the story much better justice than this book and in 1/10th of the time. I feel sorry for the narrator who had to go through it in its entirety. I give it two stars because it's a story people should know, but it really only deserves one.
