Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Totally unexpected
Revisado: 01-08-25
I felt vested in the characters and their life decisions. The tension was amazing for a non-thriller, non-serial killer novel.

I was on the fence
Revisado: 11-14-23
First… I miss Will Patton’s Holly. His impression of how she speaks seems more on par with how I envision Holly. But I’m not the creator. Ms. Lupe did a wonderful job; I don’t mean to slam her. Just not what I expected.
Second, I see the comments regarding the political slant to the book. As I was listening, I struggled but I thought why not use your platform. And then listening to Mr. King’s author’s note. He knew what he was doing. Holly is very much a hypochondriac and this scenario played so well for her. It was ironic she worried about getting COVID after losing her mother to it, only to end up where she did (trying not to spoil it).
Bottom line, I loved it. I now need to go back and listen to Mr. Mercedes. I only met Holly in The Outsider.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 02-17-23
Of course I compare everything to The Nightengale. It was touching but I was disappointed in the final twists and the ending. Just weak in comparison to other novels by Hannah.

This was brilliant. I’m going to buy it for my mom. The suspense was so well written. And while I was convinced I knew who did what, I didn’t see the depth. Just wow!
