Historia
When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Through Anna's eyes we follow the story of the fateful year of 1666, as she and her fellow villagers confront the spread of disease and superstition. Great story. Exhausting narration.
Revisado: 03-17-24
The story’s interesting and captivating. I haven’t read many stories of the Puritans that presents a balanced view of good/sensible people versus punitive/cold practices. It's a heart warming story. However, the narrator sounds half asleep - literally. I had to speed up the reading just to get her pace to reflect the energy of someone who could get off the floor and walk a normal pace. At times, her style was robotic as well, reading with fake staccato worse than what an amateur middle school actor would do. It was weird to hear the lack professionalism. What was the publisher thinking?

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Too long by 50%, ridiculous!
Revisado: 09-04-23
Went on and on and on and on. I stopped caring with 13 hours left. I stopped listening with 8 hrs left. The first and natural place to end the book would have provided a beautiful and rich story. The second layer was tolerable and still a good book. After that pointless. I loved his other book. This one, not so much.

Historia
Despite Israel's determined staying power in a hostile environment, its military might, and the innovation it fosters in businesses globally, the country is more divided than ever. The old guard—socialist secular elites and idealists—are a dying breed, and the state’s democratic foundations are being challenged. A dynamic and exuberant country of nine million, Israel is now largely comprised of native-born Hebrew speakers, and yet any permanent sense of security and normalcy is elusive.

Very little Hope represented here
Revisado: 07-17-23
I'm traveling to Israel in two weeks and read this book as part of my self education. A full 80-90% of this book focused on conflict: mostly Jew against Jew but also Israel vs the Arab world (mostly Palestine). Ashkenazi vs Mizrahi, ultra orthodox vs everyone else, left vs right, the original settlers vs each new wave of Jewish immigrants, socialists vs capitalists, white Jews vs. black Jews, etc etc. It's incredibly depressing and left me feeling hopeless about humanity in general (If the uniformly persecuted Jewish people cant even overcome differences to love and honor each other, there's no hope for the rest of humanity.)
I truly wish the author spoke more about all the inclusuve policies and technological innovations that have come from Israel and it's amazingly resilient population. She touched on these but too briefly.
Based on the content, the title should be Israel: Land of Conflict and Inability To Get Out of Our Own Way.
I will now look for resources representing Hope as well.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Love the book. Narrator terrible!
Revisado: 12-12-22
I love Barbara Kingsolver as an author. This is a great story of a difficult time and place - humanely told. The narrator, I'm sorry to say, lacked any affect or any pretense of acting. She simply read aloud and not well. No change of voice to denote the change of protagonist with each chapter. Each chapter was organized around one person's POV with the person's name actually given. It couldn't have been easier for an actor to say, "ok, now I have to use a different voice." It was as if she was told specifically, "Do not act. Do not do anything to reveal emotion through your voice. Do not alter your pace no matter what's happening in the story. Do not think. Just read." you it was that bad. I kid you not!
I'm glad I kept listening bc the story is worth it.

There should have been a disclaimer about this book. It's very dark. Forced sex acts while being drugged and bound. I wish I never opened it. I loved the series until this book. Beware.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

After listening once to her, Juliet Stevenson the performer, I searched other books she did. I chose Middlemarch without realizing it was such a classic. It's long but worth it if you like English period pieces.

The whole thing was a thinly veiled opportunity to lecture through story telling. Although I agreed with the principles, it was tiresome and annoying.
