Spoilers ahead -

Meh. I was interested enough to complete this, but barely. Among other problems, the characters didn’t make sense. She falls in love so deeply, she decides to stay in the 1500’s after only a few days. And she’s pregnant. It’s the conversation where someone tells her they lost 3 kids in childbirth that instantly convinces her to stay. Really??
He’s been raised that a wanton woman will cheat on you and ruin your life. But when she is pregnant by someone else when not married, acts sexually aggressive and experienced, and tells him she is a wanton woman, none of that’s a problem?? There were more problems with the book but I’ll stop there.

What about Phil Gigante’s performance did you like?

Great male voices. Nothing was wrong with his female voices - but even he couldn't save how ridiculous, annoying, and non-sensical the heroine was.

Any additional comments?

I understand suspension of disbelief. This is a time-travel story with druids, etc., which I can accept. However, the 16th century characters were completely unrealistic in their reactions to the modern heroine. For example, the hero, a laird, sees the heroine for the first time (in modern times) and she's wearing short shorts. He, realistically, thinks she's in her underwear. But when she insists her clothes are fine, his next thought is to consider that this virtual stranger might be a possible wife for him. That makes no sense from his point of view. A 16th century laird would think she was insane or a prostitute, not a potential wife. This sort of stuff happens non-stop, so that the 16th century characters seem completely unbelievable and the story, ridiculous.

The heroine's non-sensical behavior, her idiotic thoughts, and her obnoxiousness made me want to stop reading repeatedly. If I heard one more word about her "cherry," I could have barfed, and that was the least of it. The guy was a good character and the sex was good. But I couldn't decide if I wanted him to sleep with her or murder her!

It really does summarize what's in the Bible, for those who are interested in what it says. But really entertaining and cute as well. So well done! And the narrator is great as well.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Heather Wilds?

While well-written, the story is pretty tedious - Girl wants to be with guy. People keep them apart unfairly, while they barely ever see each other. That's almost the entire book. But it was the repetitive cadence of the narrator that drove me up a wall. She's obviously talented (although her welsh people sounded jamaican) but someone needed to tell her to mix up her cadence. It was so repetitive, I almost couldn't make it through the book. And with the story being dull, I had to force myself to finish the thing. Luckily, the last part is a bit more interesting. But it was a slog.

The Love Scenes Are Terrible! and other problems..

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I've never written a review before, but I feel this has to be said. I am halfway through this book, and I doubt I will be able to finish it.

First, the heroine is not great. She is, at times, really annoying and unbelievable. I couldn't decide if it was how it was written or how it was performed that made her so annoying. There are definitely parts where her dialogue just doesn't ring true and is odd. I have a hard time blaming the reader, because he does a great job with the male characters. But she reminded me of Mrs. Doubtfire at times. It's not great. And some of the things she said made me squirm with embarrassment for her - because they were so unintentionally awkward.

Second, the love aspect of the story just doesn't work. I liked the 2 characters in general (when the heroine wasn't being weird) but there was no relationship developed between them - other than intense lust. I've read many, many romances over the years and I can't remember one so unbelievable. There is a lot of discussion about the characters' "urges," which is really off-putting, and it makes really clear that this is 100 percent a physical interest between them. Nothing happens to make you believe that they have a reason to be in love, except that they like making out. To be honest, that could be the entire basis for the relationship - but it isn't even developed well!

Which brings us to the last problem - the love scenes. Yuck! Sex writing has to be pretty bad before I'm grossed out. But "The bouquet of her sex" does not need to be discussed. Even that could be forgiven (maybe) if it wasn't so awkward and just generally - unsexy! I was squirming in my seat - in a bad way - and pitying the reader for having to read this stuff out loud! How can this be the first book in a series?? It boggles the mind.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story is good. The execution has some problems.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Woodson?

Paul Woodson does great Scottish male characters. His characterization of this chick as Mrs. Doubtfire was probably due to her dippy way of talking. I can't blame him.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I liked the story. I liked the male main character. All of the characters in the book were fine except the weirdo heroine.

Repulsive and horribly narrated

In terms of subject matter, everything about this book is nauseating. In terms of its narration, it's nothing less than EXCRUCIATING. The takeaway from having suffered through this vomit-inspiring stutterfest? - Tucker Max is a boring oxygen thief. That's about it.

And by the way, his over-the-top bragging about attending Duke for law school was hilarious. If you want to act like such an arrogant assh*le, pick a better law school. Like NYU. Or Harvard. Or Columbia. Or Yale. Or Stanford. Etc. What a joke.
