A good listen if you're into this sort of thing

This is a well done example of futanari sci-fi erotica. It provides just enough technical details to establish the world without going too far into pseudoscience buzzwords. Both stories were interesting and arousing. The narrator did a very good job with inflection, emotion, and distinct character voices. I was initially going to give it 4 stars for performance due to a flubbed word that had to be repeated in the first story, however I ultimately felt that would be too harsh. This is my first book on Audible that had an editing issue like that, but considering this is a more obscure title, I feel a minor mistake like that can be overlooked.

There's some amount of embarrassment that comes with attaching my name to a review for fetish erotica, but I felt these authors & narrator deserve a little more publicity. I hope having at least one review will motivate more people to consider picking up this title.

I appreciate that the author is starting to consolidate this series and that he didn't make this 3 separate books. Everyone else is gushing over this book so I'll point out some of the flaws. He's rehashing the same themes over and over again. Torture and rape are overused to make it obvious who the bad guys are and to make the reader feel justified in wishing for their gruesome deaths. Also, literally HOURS of this book are bad guys giving monologues to an incapacitated/powerless Richter. It's more total time than every Bond villain's speeches put together.

Every character other than Richter (even other Chaos Seeds) feels like an NPC and has to act according to their pre-established nature. Nobody other than the main character has to make a decision and it's feeling more and more like he really is all alone in a computer program with just a sophisticated AI to keep him company. It doesn't feel like he's in a vast, unexplored planet populated with unrelated people. The world and everyone in it solely exist to react to the things that he does and give him one super rare thing after another. He has yet to encounter the consequences of someone else's decisions. It's a single player power fantasy with the illusion of other people.

I'll probably buy the next book when it comes out, but am hoping this is reaching some sort of conclusion.

No spoilers, but this gets really dark early on. The author expertly manipulated my emotions between rage and despair and held the tone for too long, in my opinion. I was starting to physically feel sick with how much I hated one of the enemies and realized that I was going to have to stop listening to this series if that plot line did not resolve itself soon. On a brutality scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is comedic kid fantasy where nobody ever gets hurt, and 10 is genocide and graphic depiction of torturing pregnant women & children to death, this book reached a 7 or an 8. For comparison, the first book in this series had rape and human(oid) trafficking and I'd rate it a 5 on that scale. The Red Wedding from Game of Thrones is a 9.

Something I hate in anime is the trope where there's some enemy that is so insane they lick their weapons and never stop smiling or laughing cheerfully while vivisecting an innocent person or something. This book has one of those characters. Fortunately, the story goes from hardcore sadism back to the milder fantasy adventure tone of the first two books. I am going to be more cautious going forward with the series.

A great short story, but not a sequel to Elantris

I purchased this story immediately after listening to Elantris. I don't regret it at all, but for the life of me I can't find the tiniest shred of evidence that these stories take place in the same universe, let alone the same planet. Perhaps it's set thousands of years later when the names of all the places and empires have long since changed. The book doesn't make any of this clear.

There is a common narrative theme with Elantris, though. Both have a main character capable of genuine magic who is antagonized and labeled a heretic by an oppressive, religious empire.

The magic system here is creative and interesting, being based on the notion of all objects having souls. Properties of anything can be rewritten, limited only by plausibility. It's a fitting metaphor for the process of writing and editing a story as an author. Even a fantasy story must remain plausible after the initial deviations from reality have been explained to the reader, otherwise it will fall apart.

I was initially turned off to the whole "one man fulfills his destiny in the fight against good and evil" vibe. The first couple paragraphs read like a list of fantasy tropes. The book is extremely theatrical and nobody speaks like an actual human being. However, I eventually got into the story and got past the dramatic presentation. The narrator slurps while speaking, which is a bit distracting, but he puts emotion behind all of the characters. Make sure to listen to the sample to see if this book is for you.

My only regret is that I can't binge listen to the whole series yet. Good mix of hard sci-fi and humor. I was able to use the galaxy map from a video game (Elite: Dangerous) to follow along with the characters as they travel to the various stars close to Earth.
