Historia
The world-renowned philosopher and author of the best-selling Justice explores the central question of our time: What has become of the common good? World-renowned philosopher Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the crises that are upending our world, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. Sandel shows the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgment it imposes on those left behind, and traces the dire consequences across a wide swath of American life.

Great ideas fit for our time
Revisado: 01-24-25
The author's thesis is both profound and simple. His approach allows us to see the humanity of others and stop turning them into the "other".
The book is great! But the author is not a great narrator. I recommend actually reading this yourself, rather than listening to the audio.

In PALO ALTO, the first comprehensive, global history of Silicon Valley, Malcolm Harris examines how and why Northern California evolved in the particular, consequential way it did, tracing the ideologies, technologies, and policies that have been engineered there over the course of 150 years of Anglo settler colonialism, from IQ tests to the "tragedy of the commons," racial genetics, and "broken windows" theory.

In the early 20th century, business elites, trade associations, wealthy powerbrokers, and media allies set out to build a new American orthodoxy: down with 'big government' and up with unfettered markets. With startling archival evidence, Oreskes and Conway document campaigns to rewrite textbooks, combat unions, and defend child labor.

Great Book!
Revisado: 03-18-23
The authors lay out a well reasoned argument that a few wealthy corporations and individuals have spun webs of self-serving lies to convince many Americans that governments are inefficient and wasteful and any regulation of markets is harmful. This book highlights many examples when governments have provided services and helped develop technologies which markets were either unwilling or unable to provide or develop. The point is also well proven that markets need sensible rules (regulations) to function for the benefit of society and to avoid harmful excesses that benefit few or no one.

Historia
First published in 1866, The Moors in Spain is a classic in Middle Eastern history and has been an important work in this category for over a century. For a number of years, there were few works of history that covered non-Christian civilizations, especially those written in English. Thanks to Stanley Lane-Poole’s dedication to the study of Egypt and Middle Eastern histories, there are several classic examples of those that can be studied.

Historia
Eat Like a Local - Oakland, by Michael J McMorrow, offers insights on food in Oakland. Culinary tourism is an important aspect of any travel experience. Food has the ability to tell you a story of a destination, its landscapes, and culture on a single plate. Most food guides tell you how to eat like a tourist. Although there is nothing wrong with that, as part of the Eat Like a Local series, this book will give you a food guide from someone who has lived at your next culinary destination.

The only complaint I have is the narrator does not correctly pronounce Alameda. There is an "a" after the "Al" in Alameda. it's not Almeda :^)

Historia
Stephanie Kelton's brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country.

The truth about money
Revisado: 08-15-20
MMT is the most important idea of this young century. Money and financial assets are tools to help us optimize our physical and human assets. Money is entirely made up. Money should never stop is from utilizing our resources. If lack of spending or investment is preventing us from using or developing useful resources, the government should be obliged to spend what is needed.
