Historia
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans - though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Visceral. Gruesome
Revisado: 02-08-23
This book is very much in the tradition of Upton Sinclair, George Orwell and HG Wells. The writing style feels familiar, the blank canvas of the protagonist also feels familiar. The book itself is very gory. Bad actions don’t really have consequences and it really just feels like the point of the book is that you should be vegan. I kept waiting for an exciting twist but the whole book feels like a short story that goes on for longer than I wanted. Very well written but not my cup of tea.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Affable and goofy, it’s quite enjoyable listening to Dave Grohl’s recounting of his career and family. Although touched by tragedies Dave never forgets his roots or his wonder for his profession.

4th grade science teacher tries to be cool

If you’re not really into science maybe this will feel approachable. If you enjoy a lot of science writing this is going to feel like education trying too hard to be “rad”

This book was perfect for a tedious afternoon at work. I got my work done and the story was just engaging enough to keep me on task. The writing is a bit old fashioned at times so if you're unable to get through old school gender normativity it might not be for you. However, I found the story compelling and the narration top notch.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Off-putting narration.
Revisado: 05-13-19
I should have listened to the other reviews about the narration of this book. It's a book about a rapist and murderer but read in a nearly happy tone. It's like when you're reading to a baby and it doesn't matter if you're reading Goodnight Moon or the Wall Street Journal if it's in that calming cadence. Unfortunately, most of us listening to this book are not babies and do understand the meanings of words. I couldn't finish this book.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Revisado: 02-08-19
Whatever the audio version of a "page turner" is is what this book was. I was sad to have finished. The science was compelling and detailed, the characters were equally detailed and fleshed out. Anyone who loves hard science sci-fi should read this!

Why oh Why did I download this?!
Revisado: 11-17-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story was somewhat interesting but sadly it wasn't insightful enough to make this feel like it was worth my time. I continue to have fondness for the author and her journey, it didn't feel like whining like I've seen others critique.Parts of it felt self aggrandizing as if she could make up for the years of put downs from others by writing affirmations to herself. I felt like her audience should have been her therapist or her best friend but it wasn't crafted for general consumption.
Would you be willing to try another book from Holly Madison? Why or why not?
No, she seems like she tries very hard but the writing style was too AP English and not insightful adult.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I knew what her voice was before I got this book, I saw the show, but I just hadn't realized how hard it would be to listen to for hours on end. Perhaps some vocal coaching to learn about dramatic pauses and tone variation could help.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I did listen to the whole thing (I sped it up around half way through) so it wasn't the worst. It was interesting to see how someone can sink herself into such a controlling and mentally abusive relationship. I see why she wrote it, I wish she had been helped with the style a lot more.
