I have loved Barbara Kingsolver since I read The Bean Trees when I was 19 years old. This may be my favorite yet… utterly captivating and made only better by Charlie Thurston’s stunning narration.

Six hours of beautiful. The stories are brilliantly crafted, compelling, and capture the beauty of Chinese culture and families. The narration only elevates what the writing offers - bringing tension, heartbreak and deeply felt emotions to the surface.

I don’t know that I would have found this book or picked it out on my own. But I decided to give it a try after a recommendation and have zero regrets. A beautiful story that is equal parts hope and despair, falling and lifting up. Zura Johnson lifts this story off the page so exquisitely. Her tone and focus of feeling allowing you to envision each tale told by the narrator as you become deeply invested in the survival of the stories she weaves.

I have to start by saying this is not a book that I typically would be drawn to as a reader. But I’m so glad I listened. Sean Clarke weaves a compelling story/adventure that you get caught up in. I can’t say the amount of times I was frustrated by yet another curve ball thrown in the way of the protagonist. Curtis Michael Holland’s narration was lovely. He leans into the pain and creates such empathy for the protagonist. His character voices are diverse and engaging and his voice is just smooth as silk. Even and steady and true.

This book is the healing we all needed after years of separation, isolation, and strife. The narration pulls you in deeper with each character introduced and each thought shared. The whole experience is a quiet cup of coffee on a chilly morning with someone you care about.

I spent some time this weekend tucked under a blanket listening to The Road Less Traveled. I've not listened to a screenplay before and wondered how complicated it might be to follow the various locations and shots - Victor Warren deftly takes us from shot to shot, allowing us enough time to "see" the location before the scene begins. Characters are clear and varied. The narration reminded me a bit of George Guidall's reading of I'll Take You There by Wally Lamb. Warren's voice was about as comforting as the blanket I was under and painted a picture with this heartbreaker of a family story. I may have known where the story was heading, but I was absolutely going to hang on for the ride. This screenplay is a lovely reminder of forgiveness, togetherness and family amid all its complications. it's never too late to repair that which is broken. Clearly the material is close to home for Warren, which is a true benefit to his storytelling - you can hear the hurt and love in his voice. Worth the listen.
