Historia
Brunelleschi's Dome is the story of how a Renaissance genius bent men, materials, and the very forces of nature to build an architectural wonder we continue to marvel at today. Denounced at first as a madman, Brunelleschi was celebrated at the end as a genius. He engineered the perfect placement of brick and stone, built ingenious hoists and cranes to carry an estimated 70 million pounds hundreds of feet into the air, and designed the workers' platforms and routines so carefully that only one man died during the decades of construction.

A fascinating read - a journey into the try of the action of il Duomo
Revisado: 04-21-25
I must say I really enjoyed both the audible, and physical book. The story of the building of il Duomo is multi faceted. The back and forth between Lorenzo and Filippo and the explanation of how the dome was designed, and the related tools and processes required to create it is well worth reading. Not to mention a few side notes on Filippo’s joy in some very complex pranks. One of the most profound points is that the cathedral was built before the dome was even considered feasible. It was approved in 1294, and consecrated in 1436! A highly recommended book.

Historia
The breakthrough concepts of Pattern Breakers come from the observations of Mike Maples Jr., a seasoned venture capitalist, who noticed something strange. Start-ups like Twitter, Twitch, and Lyft had achieved extraordinary success despite their disregard for “best practices.” In contrast, other startups deemed highly promising often failed, even when they seemed to do everything right. Seeking answers, Maples and coauthor Peter Ziebelman set out to discover the hidden forces that drive extraordinary start-up success.

Revisado: 02-09-25
I’ve read numerous books on startups, and venture capital. This at the meta level describes the fundamentals of how to create a startup that aims to create a fundamental difference. It is utterly fabulous - if you are building a startup read this book. It is that good.
It is funny, humble and full of deep insights.

Historia
The intelligence failures surrounding the invasion of Iraq dramatically illustrate the necessity of developing standards for evaluating expert opinion. This audiobook fills that need. Here, Philip E. Tetlock explores what constitutes good judgment in predicting future events, and looks at why experts are often wrong in their forecasts. Tetlock first discusses arguments about whether the world is too complex for people to find the tools to understand political phenomena, let alone predict the future.

A book I come back to time and again
Revisado: 02-19-23
This is an easy recommendation, the book covers the fascinating topic of assessing actual political prediction. It is a ground breaking work.
The backdrop used relates to Isaiah Berlins wonderful work ‘The Hedgehog and the Fox”, where Hedgehog’s focus and justify a single great idea, and Foxes incorporate many small ideas to predict future political outcomes.
The question asked is “ Which form is better?”, here we see a beautiful analysis of the different forms and approaches to political prediction against a backdrop of rigorous statistical analysis.
The results and observations are fascinating/ this this is a highly recommended read. Enjoy.

Marvelous
Revisado: 09-12-21
My sense has always been that focus is important, this book codifies the why and how of achieving extraordinary results through extreme focus and removing noise from your life. No is powerful it enables you to focus on a yes and achieve your target result. I particularly enjoyed the way the book focuses on the Pareto principle. Achieve 80% of your result by focusing your efforts on the 20% that will matters. Highly recommended.

Historia
"Information is endlessly available to us; where shall wisdom be found?" is the crucial question with which renowned literary critic Harold Bloom begins this impassioned book on the pleasures and benefits of reading well. For more than forty years, Bloom has transformed college students into lifelong readers with his unrivaled love for literature. Now, at a time when faster and easier electronic media threatens to eclipse the practice of reading, Bloom draws on his experience as critic, teacher, and prolific reader to plumb the great books for their sustaining wisdom.

A journey into the mind of Harold Bloom
Revisado: 01-18-21
I admit I have read this book more than once, both in physical and audible form. It provides the reader with deep insight into the "How" and Why" of reading through the application of examples and dissection of the writing form. The book provides the reader with the welcome experience of Harold Bloom's thinking as to value of reading poetry, short story and novel. Highly, highly recommended.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Wow - An Exceptional Memoir
Revisado: 01-05-21
A stunning memoir, thoughtful provocative yet uplifting in its outcome. A deeply personal memoir of a life born into a deeply religious household, a life that grew beyond the confines of the reality that surrounded that birth through the acceptance and embrace of an education. An easy recommendation though I admit having to set aside on many occasions. Both the book and audible narration describe events that force one to sometimes wish to look away from potential outcomes. Perseverance is worthwhile. Highly recommended.

Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

Worth listening too
Revisado: 07-17-20
Why? Developing an IT Security budget is really hard, this is one of the few books I feel is worth reading in order to get a predictive sense of risk of occurrence against impact.
By estimating the potential occurrence of an event against the events business impact you can allocate funds against your estimates using a Bayesian statistical model.
The audible book is a fine listen, though the description of excel formulas feels odd (chuckle), that said the actual book does a great job of demonstrating both the "how" and "why" of the approach using clear practical examples with a great accompanying web-site.

Excellent and interesting
Revisado: 04-28-20
Jim Simons and Renaissance Capital make for an intriguing story especially in light of the impact of Robert Mercer and his daughter's work on our past election.
It is interesting, especially in light of some of the tidbits of early buying and selling behaviors used. A well-crafted book with strong insights into the characters writ large, and their impact on our society.
Worth reading.
