The importance of sisterhood
Revisado: 01-04-25
This Chinese historical fiction focuses on two girls who become laotong (old sames & sworn lifelong best friends). They share the secret language of n̈u shu, a written form for women by women since they weren't allowed a formal education. The girls see each through the healing of foot binding, loss, pain, marriage, the rise of one's social standing, and the fall of the other. The story focuses on miscommunication between friends and the heartache and shame that follows. This is a story of redemption and self-discovery in a time when women were viewed as less than. It is beautiful in its imagery, and it's a prose sings to the sisterhood that each woman needs. Having read and listened to this many times, I still find myself crying.

Historia
Nanzeen's inauspicious birth in a Bangladeshi village imbues in her a sense of fatalism that she carries across continents. Married off to a man old enough to be her father, Nanzeen moves to London and cares for her family. But gradually she begins to question whether fate controls her or whether she has a hand in her own destiny. She discovers both the complexity that comes with free choice and the depth of her attachment to her husband, her daughters and her new world.

Control and Lack of Control
Revisado: 01-03-25
Frustration, tradition, and loneliness dictate the main character's life. She's miserable until she finds a way to her own personal freedom. There are moments that are hard to read and other moments where you can't stop reading.

Historia
In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls that echo the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood.

Twist Fairytale - Alice Grownup
Revisado: 01-03-25
This is the dark, twisted tale of what happens after Alice grows up. The memories are fuzzy, and her family has abandoned her to an institution. The Mad Hatter has become her only ally. His suffers a similar same fate - memories are fuzzy, he doesn't know where his family is, and he's in the same institution. Once out, they must search for answers, recapture the jobberywocky, remember, and face the creatures who would take ownership of Alice. Alice is special; they all want her for it - except Chester who uses her and helps her all at once. It's heavy, but you can't stop listening/reading. This is my second time finishing this story. Definitely a favorite.

Historia
Best-selling author Thrity Umrigar won the Nieman Fellowship and earned a finalist spot for the PEN/Beyond Margins award with The Space Between Us. Set in modern-day India, this evocative novel follows upper-middle-class Parsi housewife Sera Dubash and 65-year-old illiterate household worker Bhima as they make their way through life. Though separated by their stations in life, the two women share bonds of womanhood that prove far stronger than the divisions of class or culture.

Complex yet fragile relationship between classes
Revisado: 01-03-25
Set in modern-day India, this story encapsulates the social class discrepancies and the complex yet fragile bonds of employer-servant relationships. Sera (upper-middle class) and Bhima (from the slums) have been together for decades. They have seen each other through many hardships. Sera emotionally relies on Bhima; Bhima is more loyal to Sera than her own family. However, when an unfortunate wrong is dealt to Bhima's granddaughter, the bond between the two women is shaken. Bhima must decide where her loyalty actually stands. This novel shows the stark contrast of the social classes - not just financially, but in moral standing and believability. This tale is frustrating, beautiful, and sad.

Historia
Humanity has nearly destroyed its world through global warming, but now an even greater evil lurks. The indigenous people of North America are being hunted and harvested for their bone marrow, which carries the key to recovering something the rest of the population has lost: the ability to dream. In this dark world, Frenchie and his companions struggle to survive as they make their way up north to the old lands. For now, survival means staying hidden—but what they don't know is that one of them holds the secret to defeating the marrow thieves.

History always repeats - dystopia style
Revisado: 01-03-25
Set in a Canadian dystopia, sickness that causes a lack of dreams has wiped out much of civilization. Cities are in ruins. People are dying. However, those who are indigenous are unaffected. They still dream. Government officials are hunting them in the name of saving humanity since something special is in their marrow, and when caught, they are taken to schools and never seen again. Frenchie is on the run, having already lost his family, and finds a group of survivors. With this group, he finds himself, his strength, his why, and learns how far he's willing to go to live and keep those he loves alive. This is a thought-provoking tale. I highly recommend reading it.

Danny's tall and skinny. Even though he's not "built", his arms are long enough to give his pitch a power so fierce that any college scout would sign him on the spot. Ninety-five-mile-an-hour fastball, but the boy's not even on a team. Every time he gets up on the mound, he loses it. Ball ends up so far out of the strike zone it's laughable. But at his private school, they don't expect much else from him. Danny's brown. Half-Mexican brown....

Identity & Family
Revisado: 01-03-25
This coming of age story is one that will stay with you days after you finish. You'll reminisce and long for childhood summers and friendships. Danny is silent, harboring hurts, confusion, and trying to figure out who he is. He is so bottled up that it negatively impacts baseball - a sport his particularly good at. He doesn't discuss his lack of consistency with the internal dialogue he keeps up with his missing father. So, when the opportunity to spend the summer with his dad's family comes up, he takes it. This one summer is defined by friendship, family, truth, and forgiveness. You can't help but root him and Uno (his new best friend - a best friend everyone should have) on. Definitely recommend.

Its own story - not the musical or the movie
Revisado: 01-03-25
I've read this one twice. I'm so confused as to why anyone would turn this into a family-friendly musical. This novel is not for kids. Maguire (I have read several of his books) writes dark, heavy, twisted variations of fairy tales, usually showing the villain in a kinder light. Wicked follows Elphaba from before her birth to her death. She's not a powerful witch. In fact, given the Time Dragon's prediction, she's surprisingly a failure. Everything she tries to do comes to an anticlimactic end - her death included.
The story is rather sad because her whole life she tries so hard to do what is correct for it to come to nothing. The sequel follows her son who is introduced in this novel. Each book in this series is increasingly weird. I only recommend for those who enjoys darker, twisted stories. I don't recommend anyone buy this for their young readers (or at least have read it first and make an informed decision).

A different taste of history
Revisado: 01-03-25
This historical fiction takes place in 1576 Iran and loosely follows the story of one few female leaders of that time and location. Princess Pari Khan Khanoom leads from behind the scenes after the death of her father. She is confident and strong, which creates fear and resentment among those men with the power and funds to do anything about her. She makes enemies of the women who don't have the ear of favor of men of power and are confined to the harem. They whisper enough to create distrust. Her most trusted servant, ally, and friend is a eunuch named Javaher whose story is as interesting or more so as hers. He must tread lightly to appease both sides within the court. This story blended political intrigue with history. The imagery is fantastic.

Family Trauma & Redemption
Revisado: 01-03-25
Main character, Kambili Achike, narrates this coming of age tale. At fifteen, she's introvert to the point of awkwardness, but no one can get close enough to her to find out why. As Kambili tells her story, it becomes painfully obvious. Her father is incredibly abusive. However, a rare visit to her aunt and cousins changes everything. Kambili finds her voice and starts doing little, hidden acts of rebellion. This story clenches itself around your heart and doesn't let go.

In Women of the Silk, Gail Tsukiyama takes listeners back to rural China in 1926, where a group of women forge a sisterhood amid the reeling machines that reverberate and clamor in a vast silk factory from dawn to dusk. Another beautiful historical fiction!
Revisado: 09-28-24
It highlights the decisions made during times of hardships. Both families and their daughters were forced to live with the consequences of whatever fell. The strength of young girls and women forced into the new environment to work and send home money is awe-inspiring and often still tragic. Yet, these women keep going. They learn to rely on each other and form a new family - one stronger than the ties of blood.
