The best way to enjoy a story is by hearing the author read their work to you. The inflection, tone, and flow are listened to in the manner that they were written. I must admit the story took a little longer to get into. Still, the characters began defining themselves with each word, and it draws you in further.

These two women are separated by the expanse of time but are experiencing the events of life, the pivotal decisions, and difficulties in stride with one another. The attention to detail is not lost across both periods, and you are drawn in with rich details. While the story is deeply wrapped in religion, you have not pulled away from the actual story that is being told. I enjoyed this read, and I would recommend it to others.

This book starts out strong and with plenty of mystery. You are taken through the memories of Manuel as a child and right during the event that changes his life. Manuel is a smart and aware character who is able to get on top despite the disadvantages he is given. Through his story, you will meet all his friends who will become the prominent members of his gang.

This book may not be for everyone though, it's filled with explicit acts of rape and murder.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
