Part thriller, part self-help manual, and part drinking companion, Corkscrew is a coruscating critique of neoliberal capitalism, religious intolerance, and the perils of blind tasting.

Finally couldn't tolerate the teenage fantasy sexual prowess. Just silly. Was funny in spots but became repetitive.

Monty Python Reads Wine
Revisado: 06-19-20
After putting up with hours of mis-pronunciation I finally gave up. Couldn't concentrate on the content which is basic. BTW wine is made, not grown. If you don't know wine please don't listen to this. Read it.
Let's play guess the term:

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Good Book. Great Performance.
Revisado: 11-08-17
I now find myself looking up Gabra Zackman as a narrator. Her voice is intelligent and pleasant, no weird uptalk or downtalk or vocal fry. I felt as if I were listening to the author. The book itself is terrific. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, always fascinating. It hits all the feels.

Historia
Professional journalist and amateur drinker Bianca Bosker didn’t know much about wine - until she discovered an alternate universe where taste reigns supreme, a world of elite sommeliers who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of flavor. Astounded by their fervor and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, she set out to uncover what drove their obsession and whether she, too, could become a “cork dork”.

I absolutely loved this book and its heroine.
Revisado: 06-13-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to both wine newbies and cork dorks. It's clever and scientifically interesting. The writer/narrator seems charming and well-informed.
What other book might you compare Cork Dork to and why?
The Juice: Vinous Veritas by Jay McInerny. Since they're read by the author the words match the voice.. They combine insights with humour and don't take themselves too seriously. I've listened both both of them twice.
Have you listened to any of Bianca Bosker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes

Historia
In 1940, France fell to the Nazis and almost immediately the German army began a campaign of pillaging one of the assets the French hold most dear: their wine. Like others in the French Resistance, winemakers mobilized to oppose their occupiers, but the tale of their extraordinary efforts has remained largely unknown - until now. This is the thrilling and harrowing story of the French wine producers who undertook ingenious, daring measures to save their cherished crops and bottles as the Germans closed in on them.

NO $%*_(^^ ACCENTS!
Revisado: 06-13-17
Where does Wine and War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Near the bottom only because the reading is so distracting that I forget the content.
What did you like best about this story?
The fact that so many of the stories are first person. I feel that a fragile historical jewel has been preserved.
How could the performance have been better?
What is it with accents? Please! If you can't pronounce French properly please don't Inspector Clouseau (or Hogan's Heroes German or faux Upper Class Twit English). Doing a bad French accent in a mincing tone because you're quoting a woman is just cringe-inducing. This guy even does an "American" accent! He's American for heaven's sake. Also, please, if you're speaking English, it's not "Champanyuh" or "Paree". If the content weren't so interesting I would have stopped listening hours ago.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The vine is mightier than the sword.

Historia
Gallo Be Thy Name is the portrait of an American dynasty that rose from hardscrabble poverty in the early 1900s to become the most successful wine company in the world through toil, cunning, and crime. From selling Dago Red to Al Capone during Prohibition to conquering America's wine market with such plonk as Thunderbird and Ripple, and from the Great Depression to the roiling farm labor movements of the 60s and 70s, the Gallos rode the turbulent currents of history to triumph, with iconic brothers Ernest and Julio steering the ship.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes. Overall informative.
What did you like best about this story?
They were truly awful people. Always fun to see where moguls come from.
Would you be willing to try another one of Grainger Hines’s performances?
Absolutely not. You speak for a living. Please check out your pronunciation. It's not "pinot noyer" or "malbe". He's constantly missing or adding letters in the commonest words. It's painful to hear.
