Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Eight years after the publication of this book, at the 2024 Republican National Convention, he introduced his mother (who has reportedly been clean and sober for ten years) to the nation. This book helps me to better understand the significance of that moment, and also what has made him who he is.

Volume One of Stalin begins and ends in January 1928 as Stalin boards a train bound for Siberia, about to embark upon the greatest gamble of his political life. He is now the ruler of the largest country in the world, but a poor and backward one, far behind the great capitalist countries in industrial and military power, encircled on all sides. In Siberia, Stalin conceives of the largest program of social reengineering ever attempted.

Extremely in-depth
Revisado: 11-12-23
This is a history textbook covering the Russian Revolution and the early years under Communism. Very informative, but very much packed with information. Not easy to absorb, and took a long while to get through.
That said, I’m looking forward to reading the future volumes covering the rest of Stalin’s life.
I used to think Stalin was pure evil, a la Hitler. Now I wonder whether it was his fanatical devotion to the cause that led him to do what he did. Presumably, by the time I’ve finished the future volumes, that answer will be more clear.

Another great story from John Sandford. And superb narration by Richard Ferrone, who has been by far my favorite audiobook performer.

Historia
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Great story; so-so narration
Revisado: 10-10-23
This was a fascinating account of the dawning of the Space Age.
Having said that, I was somewhat disappointed by Dennis Quaid as narrator. I like him as an actor, he has a great voice for the narration, and he’s an aviator, himself; but I often got the impression he was “sight-reading” the text for the first time, without rehearsing his lines, and sometimes mispronouncing words. Those seem to me to be rookie mistakes for an accomplished actor of his caliber.
Overall, it was a great listen, but it could so easily have been better.

The late Clive Cussler has obviously left his characters and his legacy in good hands. I enjoyed this story every bit as much as any written by Mr. Cussler, himself. I’m looking forward to the next story in the series.

By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

Less political commentary, please
Revisado: 04-22-23
We’re all entitled to our opinions, but being slapped in the face with the author’s political rant is unpleasant. Not all of us are woke progressives, Mr. Sanford.
That said, I could listen to most anything read by the late, great Richard Ferrone. He will be sorely missed. The Davenport books will never be quite the same without him. R. I. P.

Historia
The Continental Op is a short, squat, and utterly unsentimental tank of a private detective. Miss Gabrielle Dain Leggett is young, wealthy, and a devotee of morphine and religious cults. She has an unfortunate effect on the people around her: they have a habit of dying violently. Is Gabrielle the victim of a family curse? Or is the truth about her weirder and infinitely more dangerous? The Dain Curse is one of the Continental Op's most bizarre cases, and a tautly crafted masterpiece of suspense.

Hammett read by Ferrone!
Revisado: 07-26-21
As with Ferrone’s reading of Red Harvest, it’s tough to imagine a better combination than these two. If you like Ferrone’s reading of John Sanford’s Lucas Davenport, you’ll love his readings of Dashiell Hammett’s Continental Op. I only wish I could find Ferrone’s readings of every Hammett story.
I’m sure I’ll come back to these in the future.
