Historia
Happy Doll is a charming, if occasionally inexpert, private detective living just one sheer cliff drop beneath the Hollywood sign with his beloved half-Chihuahua half-Terrier, George. A veteran of both the Navy and LAPD, Doll supplements his meager income as a P.I. by working through the night at a local Thai spa that offers its clients a number of special services. Armed with his 16-inch steel telescopic baton, biting dry humor, and just a bit of a hero complex, the ex-cop sets out to protect the women who work there from clients who have trouble understanding the word "no".

I love LA Noir but
Revisado: 05-16-22
nothing Ames brings to this is new, except his gratuitous exploitation of the terror and brutality Noir style has always carried in more eloquent and far more morally challenging ways. This felt like a sadistic wallow. Glad I did not pay more for the experience than $2 on the daily deal.

Historia
"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Scott Brick is the worst reader
Revisado: 07-29-10
I could not listen to this book. I think Michael Pollan is amazing and the book is fascinating, timely and revelatory, but I cannot listen to Scott Brick. His delivery is wooden and formulaic with terrible tics of expression that do not correspond to or respect the cadence of the prose. I feel like he has a tin ear, and I will never buy a book read by him.

extraordinary
Revisado: 07-29-10
a totally satisfying historical fiction plot played out in prose that recalls Rabelais and DylanThomas. Terrific.

Ripened "man from uncle" voice
Revisado: 07-29-10
Robert Vaughn's voice, disparaged by some other listeners, may be the best reason to listen to this investigative procedural set in the reformation. The reading is sinuous, knowing and beautifully paced, a very mature, sexy voice. I recommend it highly.
