Better in Paper; Rating is for Audio Version Only
Revisado: 11-23-10
I alternated between listening to and reading this book, as I do with many books. Unlike most of the other audio books I've listened to, I felt that the narrator detracted from this book. Half of the book is in the voice of a Filipina nanny; I felt that the narrator's accent was overdone and condescending. Also, I felt that the narrator inserted a wry satirical tone in places that were inappropriate. Overall, I felt that the narration blunted much of the subtlety of the characters' voices.

Historia
The narrator is Max Morden, a middle-aged Irishman who, soon after his wife’s death, has gone back to the seaside town where he spent his summer holidays as a child—a retreat from the grief, anger, and numbness of his life without her. But it is also a return to the place where he met the Graces, the well-heeled vacationing family with whom he experienced the strange suddenness of both love and death for the first time.

Great book, horrible narration
Revisado: 04-19-09
I loved this book, but found the audio version difficult to listen to. The narrator had an overbearing style that interferred with the flow of the beautifully crafted sentences. He seemed to think that his own performance was more important to the text.

Anne Heche's narration is unlistenable
Revisado: 09-22-08
I've been looking forward to this book, which has gotten great reviews and sounded like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the narration makes it impossible to listen to. Heche uses an arch, ironic tone for every single sentence, which wrings any hint of humor from the text. I tried to stick with it, hoping that her irritating mannerisms would eventually fade into the background, but to no avail. I finally had to give up. I've listened to hundreds of audio books, and I have to say that the narration here is the absolute worst I've encountered.
